"Whitey Gherkin"?
OK, more IROC trivia.
The first IROC series was a true International Race of Champions. What cars were used the first two years, who won the very first race, and what year did IROC originate?
I'll answer Dave's question about Earnhardt and the IROC race in '90. Was it Dale's first win in a Dodge?
The #98 Grey Rock Chevy....Richie Panch in '75 at Pocono?sigpic

Correct, Rick lives about 30 minutes away and Alan Dillard lives 20 minutes from me.Originally posted by palmbayer View Postrick mast ......?
True Story, Rick used to own Natural Bridge Speedway here in Va. before making it big and raced his own baby blue 22's around here, I raced against him several times, and also grew up watching Alan clean house around here back in the 70's.sigpic

You are correct in that the "championship" was for "1974", but the first race was at Riverside in October, 1973, in conjuction with the LA Times Grand Prix (for Indy Cars) using the Porsche Carerra. Donahue won three of the four races, with George Follmer won the other one.Originally posted by Gary J View PostJimmy check Wikepedia, series was launched in 73 it says, Donahue won 1 st championship in 1974 and last of the 4 races.
Porsche was the car. It was Daytona, I think Mark Donahue won , Bobby Unser and Peter Revson were real close at the finish line , 3rd place maybe . Modifieds also raced on the road course that day. 1974 ,that is all I remember about the IROC that day.
Here's some pics of that very first IROC race at Riverside.

OK... The photo with the #43 was taken on 9/18/1965 at the Capital City 300 at what was the called Atlantic Rural Fairgrounds in Richmond, VA... At that time the track was still 1/2 mile dirt... Richard Petty and Chrysler had just returned from their boycott of NASCAR, but Petty had a drag racing commitment... The car was assigned to Lee Roy Yarbrough, the only time he drove for Petty Enterprises... There had been a big storm early in the afternoon and the pit area was extremely muddy... After Yarbrough made a pit stop, he slid in the mud and whacked the light pole head-on....
Check out the second picture... four laps later, Tiny Lund also slid in the mud coming off pit road and hit the same light pole tearing the drivers door right off the car.
Concerning the Earnhardt question... If you look closely at the victory lane photos from the 1990 IROC race at Talladega, you'll see that his name is spelled "Earnhartd" on his driving uniform issued by IROC... Guess there was no time to get that boo-boo fixed before the race
