It's all my fault. When I got out of mini stocks and strictly stocks, then the whole place fell apart. As expected, I was the glue holding everything together!

Last time we had the car over there, we got into a discussion with another racer who said the problem at OSW is that Ozzy can't understand why any car below 2nd or 3rd should get paid any money at all. I guess it has to do with his drag race background. He said that's been the biggest problem with getting the place up and running and he heard Ozzy was planning on changing the payout permanently.
If Ozzy is really serious about that idea, maybe that explains the new guys' quick departure. Could also be that he was shown the budget he has to work with and decided it wasn't worth trying.

He is probably right if a drag race pays more than 4 spots that is unusual. Drag racers seem happy just to have a place to race.Originally posted by Matt Albee View PostLast time we had the car over there, we got into a discussion with another racer who said the problem at OSW is that Ozzy can't understand why any car below 2nd or 3rd should get paid any money at all. Drag racers (other than the top levels of the NHRA), never EXPECT to get paid a dime. If they collect anything at all, it's a bonus, not an expectation.
And it's true to some extent that they are happy to have somewhere to go. A large percentage of those cars will never touch a public highway... they HAVE to go to a full-blown Dragstrip.
It doesn't mean they are happy with every track, but they can't use them for any other purpose than to race it, show it, or sell it. Same with oval track cars, but nobody goes to car shows to see beat up Monte Carlos.

Oval track racing is a contact sport with the cars being disposable for the most part.Contact is going to cost money....A weekend drag racer can keep his car 30+ years, updating only when desired, pay $15 to get in and have at it...Apples & orangesOriginally posted by tccaz View PostHe is probably right if a drag race pays more than 4 spots that is unusual. And no Tech hassles. You tell THEM how fast you can go, and they equalize each pair as they go. Most, if not all inspections have to do with safety.. Not weight percentages, nose height, or soaked tires. Bring it, run it, hope you can beat the next guy, and come back next time. Sorry, no payout.... you didn't reach the Finals.

The difference is,
#1 Most Drag (Bow and Arrow) racers usually don't bring many people, if any at all.
#2 What is the weekly expense to run a Drag Car vs a Stock car(maybe 3-5 gallons of fuel and a nitrous refill. Minimum 10 for a weekly show).
#3 How often do they buy tires? Maybe 1 set of rears a year. 2 tops.
#4 How often do Drag Racers have to repair their bodies and suspension that get tore up for the sake of keeping the cars good looking and running competitive for the fans?
#5 How many extra parts do Drag Racers carry to the track (springs, shocks, gears, lube when you change gears, sway bars, transmission, extra wheels/tires, suspension parts, Radios, jacks, pit equipment, pop rivets, sawz-all, welder and the list goes on. The most important items we carry is bungee cords and DUCT TAPE!! Drag racers carry a cooler, food, tent and lounge chairs. But most of them have huge motor homes/coaches they sit in until it's time to race.
The biggest expense Drag Racers have is the bill at Steak n Shake or Denny's. This is for a weekly Friday/Saturday show. No special events. I know it costs me a minimum of $300-350 a night just go thru the gate and hope the night goes good with nothing broke or tore up. And this doesn't count Maintainence.Last edited by dd38; 07-25-2013, 06:53 PM.

Other than the Pro levels, there is basically NO fan support to base your purse on. Same with SCCA racing. Both survive because they have a lot of participation, who all PAY to race (SCCA isn't a $20 dollar race to enter), but virtually zero fan interest.
On ovals, there are people willing to pay money to see it. Not so much drags or road racing.
EXCEPT.... the highest levels of those 2. If you've never seen a Top Fuel Dragster, or an Al Holbert driven Miller Genuine Draft Porshe 962, you're also missing out. Bad ass machines.
