Scott, Siping a tire allows it to build up heat.

I took a rock hard set of 650's and we siped them. They got up to temp and softened up from 70's down to the 40's but started chunking rubber. Maybe we siped them too much. The problem we had with the 650's was they would be rocks before we wore them out.

Well I guess Bill Nye must be an asphalt guy because he was way off on the siping thing, it appears. But seriously, you've tried siping asphalt tires? I've never heard of anyone trying that. The 650s I ran always started out around 65 cold. I find it interesting that siping them softened them down to 40 without chemicals. I didn't know that was possible. The softest I've seen a 650 get is around 55 hot. What temp did you get them up to when they punched 40? Personally I'm glad to see the 650/450 tires gone. After 100 laps my right rear was no longer a grooved tire, it was worn to a slick and junk! Thanks for the insight.

"The grooves in the tires are designed to help cool the tire."--EZ
"Siping a tire allows it to build up heat"--EZ2

        Sounds kinda like global warming...

Interesting discussion for sure & I look forward to more info as it moves forward.

Right now, the first statement is making more sense to me.

Is "siping" cuts made across the tire (as opposed to grooves, which are around it)?

I don't know much about dirt racing or tire siping but I'm thinking the difference in EZ two statements have to do with HOW the grooves get in the contact patch. With a tire grooved from the manufacturer they are MOLDED into the tire. By siping you are cutting the groove into the tire by using heat. Interesting for sure, but we digress...

Tire prep discussion can go on and on.

Grooves are molded or cut with a grooving iron. They can be in any direction depending on the application.

Sipes are thin cuts in the rubber. This promotes friction to heat the tire.

Every 8" wheel class should use the F53 slick. It's a decent tire.

There is no magical tire that is soft, has grip, don't wear out or get hard. It's all a compromise.

                  R750

The R750 is a couple tenths slower than the F53. It slows down but stayed consistent and seemed like it maintained the grip level throughout the run. I ran one 5 lap run to shake the car down and ran three 20 lap runs. In the first 20 lap run, I ran 15.50's and 15.60's all 20 laps. In the second 20 lap run, I ran 15.70's and 15.80's all 20 laps. In the third 20 lap run, my first lap was a 15.05 and lap 20 was a 15.09. After 65 laps, both left sides still had the center line in them. Jeff from Hoosier told me that Desoto eats up tires worse than Pensacola. I don't know if they will repeat until someone tries. I'd like to go back to Desoto in a week or two and see. Is this tire gonna save us money? No, it's not because Josh Todd, Travis Roland, myself and the rest of the OWM guys are gonna buy three or four tires for almost every race.

That's what we're all hoping. What concerns me is the rumor that the F53 will be discontinued after March. Can anyone substantiate or refute this? If it is true then they should be testing you guys on the 2040 slick, not the R750 airplane tire. I hope it's not true since the F53 seems to be the perfect tire for the OWM from what's currently available. Everybody deserves to get what they want.

                        Most certainly.

I wonder if the emodsters are interested in the R750...

                          Ughh!!!

I am going to call yoho and Jay in a few minutes. I can tell you that hopefully Desoto doesn't change to a different tire than showtime. A lot of people run both tracks including myself this year. Like Tony said we got all the tracks on one tire after the promises of longer lasting tires that turned into junk and made the open wheels dangerous. LJ no disrespect but I heard Robbie cooper preach the same thing before we all got that P.O.S. tire crammed down our throats. If tracks run different tires say goodbye to the 20-25 car fields............

                            Just got off the phone

With Robert Yoho and Jay the tire man. Apparently some of the tracks are wanting the 800 tires. Yoho told me that he was the only one who didn't want to change.........I then called Jay and he told me that they are going to probably make the change.....Jay told me these tires are ( a different horse ) than the P.O.S. 450/650. Then he proceeded to tell me that if they don't work out that they will go back to the F-53's ?????????? WTF!!!!! Does anyone realize that a sportsman weighs 3000 pounds compared to a 2500 pound mod. Mod drivers need to step up and tell the tracks that they don't want or need a different tire......We have all been down this road......cant we learn from our past mistakes?? They both had more to say but im so pissed I cant remember...............FN ridiculous. Anyone have any barely used slicks for sale ? I will run them until they are gone............

With absolutely no disrespect to you or D.J. Who asked you to test this tire for our class?

openwm53 I don't blame you guys for being pissed . I don't get it this happens about every 2 years it seams with the tire BS. funny thing is most of the mod guys have no clue their even testing tires its top secret . like NSS had Jason Boyd testing tires in the 66 mod its been years since he's raced any car . should he even be the one testing tires ? I don't think so .
