Probably the best lesson my Dad ever taught me was...I'd rather have a little bit of somethin..rather than a whole lot of nothin...cause those little somethin add up...and when you have a whole lot of little somethins..you can get creative and use those to get more little somethins....but don't ever winde up with a whole lot of nothin! (Damn I wish I would have listened..lol)

Florida racing is dominated by racers owning racetracks. Owning a racetrack is NOTHING like or about racers or racecars. Racers live with a different code of ethics...if you wrong someone, there is a payback eventually on the racetrack. Racetracks can call racers, they have a number to call to work things out if they think its what they need to do. Most don't, and they loose racers, all it took was a call on Monday when everyone was calm. Thus the racetrack has hurt themselve regardless of wether they were right or wrong. Racetracks get paid back from fans by losing a curious first time fan, and they never get the opportunity to make things right because the fan left with a feeling like they were never missing much by not being there.. It's a business, plain and simple. It has customers coming through both gates that have to be tended to and made happy...and that doesn't mean everyone is going to leave happy but I'll go back to another lesson my Dad taught me..."when it comes to customers, DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU'R GOING TO DO, WHEN YOU SAY YOU'R GOING TO DO IT, FOR THE PRICE YOU SAID YOU'D DO IT FOR.

As referene, Advertise however you want, greet the fans and racers with a thank you for being there, make sure both customers can eat their moneys worth and enjoy their night within their budget, deliver the racing promised per the schedule with the rulebook enfored, pay the payout as promised, make sure both know you appreciated them being there and that they know you can't wait for them to come back next weekend to do it all over again.

Will they all come back...NO...but they all have a reason too....and no reason not to....just sayin

As a business, all you need is more fans, more cars, more fans, more cars, more fans, more cars, ect ect ect......FOCUS AND GROW!! One doesn't bring the other as some would say.....hard work at both ends brings them both...

I agree somewhat, but their's another side to that coin. You say something like a lot of little somethings add up. I agree, I'm doing lots of services for the same price as 5 yrs ago. Allowed quite a few customers to skip their big 5yr treatment last yr and do the renewal only. BUT, they are still my customers instead of quitting altogether. Have done this for about 4 yrs now, many people saying I'm crazy to work for these prices. I have worked breaking even or at a loss many times during this period, but I say half a glass is better than an empty one. Its called customer retention. Let me just disagree a little with you if I may. What if you called me to kill Termites but I didnt have the chemical, decided not to use any and you get Termites? I told a worker once when he said this job is way to cheap, I said, dont look at the price, treat it properly. If they get Termites we lose money, regardless of the price. So in my business you need the chemical BEFORE the customer. Differant than racing I know, but if I dont have the product, i will not have the customers, period!! Several co's have tried the diluted chemical, or NO chemical route, they are no longer here. With racing, the chemical, (Product you sell) are the racers, the fans are the customers. You need both. WIthout the racers Tim, you will NOT have the customers. Example, I just looked on the NSS web page, clicked "Next Race" it said 4/2/11. Here it is 4/6/11. Now if I was visiting here and saw that I'd say, mmmm, no races this week at NSS. Will have to go someplace else. Sorry Tim, just sitting back and being happy with all those "Little Somethings" they will become very little very fast. oh well, this all probably went over Wingers head anyhow!!!! LOL

Sorry Tim, I do not mean this as a bashing to you. but you said a whole lot of little somethings add up to a big something or somethin like that? Thats true, it does, but 2 3 car races do not add up to a big something, its still a little something. A little something that a lot of people are tired of seeing. When you cant sell your product, racing, cause you have none, you need to drop the price to your customers to get them out there, they WILL spend something, what the heck the seats are empty anyhow, in time you can help the racers afford to race and they will come out. Example, out of fear of future retrobution I cant say who but I know someone that has about 3/4 finished a race car, worked on it 3 yrs. Is now at one of the winners at NSS and OSW who hasnt raced for 2-3 yrs, was a blast to watch,he was your "product". Anyhow, none of them have any money and I'm to fed up to help them, this owner said the other day, "To hell with it, no-one has any money I think I'll sell it to the other guy, (Who is also broke) and stay home and save money, everytime we race we wont get back a quarter of the investment. Another one gone. They don't expect to MAKE money but cant afford to lose @200 or so a week either, or more realistictly much more.

Didn't go over my head Tuna but see it is still over yours. To elaborate a little more, 2-3 car fields are not even a little something. They are a negative because they will not bring in fans but will actually cause fans to stay away. Tuna is the perfect example and he's not alone. If a class is consistently drawing fields that small the track needs to eliminate the class. If you can't get enough cars for 2 heats, eliminate the class. People in these classes will have to try to get more competitors to race with them, go somewhere else that has more cars, start a club program, or change classes.

Yep,running a race track IS a business. and it is a business where the customers enter from both the front and back gates. These are very tough times indeed, thanks to our boy Meadowlark and his posse of "fellow travelers",but if you go out of your way to please your customers you can still make it - even in the racing biz. Look at it this way, would a person get better value from spending $10 going to a theatre to sample some of the latest swill emanating from the Hollywood sewer pipe or spending that same $10 on a night at the races? There is a very interesting value propostion there and race tracks can leverage off of that. Or at least they should....

Well winger, regardless of whos head it's over, the problem is still there. You may be right about too many classes, but again you keep eliminating your product, in this case racers, you will have less customers. Sometimes the is is the right way to go, I not know. I personally think I'd give more incentives to make more racers want to come than just say go away.

Mom and Dad want to take the family out. they have X? dollars to spend...AND THEY ARE GOING TO SPEND IT HAVING FUN!

So now you ask, Am I going to get it all at the gate? Or some at the consession, or some at beer room, or some at the souviner stand?

Don't mistake your self they are going to spend the entire budget and probably a lil more if they are having a great time. But when they leave, how do they feel about the money they spent.

Did you get it all at the gate? And then the rest of the night was full of alot of NO's to the kids with a pang of guilt? Or were they able to get in and everyone was able to get a special meal with a drink, hot dog and fries? And maybe Dad gets to have a couple of beers and relax, and maybe Mom gets to goto the sovenier shop and get the kids a t shirt or a programs for the drivers to sign during the autograph session.

It is a live open venue where anything can happen. There are the sights the sounds and the smells of a racetrack and that is what we recognize the second time we goto a racetrack as soon as you get out of your car. More cars make it better but it's not the end of the world.

It's about more than just how many cars vs how much at the front gate. It all comes down to value for their dollar. When they leave, did they feel like they got their moneys worth. Would they come back next week because they had a good time and they know they can afford it? Or are you going to piss them off when they show up to learn its a "special" show and the price doubled and the ugly night of No's and guilt begins....

If you think telling a customer "we had it on our website" makes them feel at all responsible for not knowing your business strategies, your wrong. More importantly, they feel you have got them all the way to the gate without telling them because you know that they will pay it rather waste the gas money it took to get there. At that point they think, they'll never trick me out of my money again! Customer lost!

True , three or four car fields are not usually very entertaining . And the solution for tiny classes is pretty simple . Combine ALL classes and run heat races and features according to Qualifying speeds each night . You can have separate classes for trucks and mini-stocks of course , but put all stock cars into one class , one set of rules that cover them all , and 8 or 9 lbs per cubic inch .
The cars compete against each other on speed , not money .

well u could also take those 2 and 3 car fiedls and combine them with other classes and have a race within a race

they don't read karnac. as most people in Fl do not.

they drive buy places like bowling centers, movies, places to eat at, etc etc etc, they all have signs. some even have adds in newspapers or on t.v.

nascar - check the percentage of viewers on t.v. nationwide, not that great. in fact how many people watch it on t.v. in the state of FL.

as one, esp. my age group dies out, new age groups take over. Everything changes, likes, dislikes.

best example would be church, go back 40, 30 years ago, now today. Churches have close their doors or the younger people have taken over and ticked the old people off.

Save short track racing, YES, but, it is or will be what we are not use to or want.
