While big purses might help, they are not the answer to all problems.

Up to few years ago, IMCA National, Boone Iowa, paid 1500 to win, 800+ cars altogether in the pits, and 350+ Mods for that fabulous race, 350+ can you imagine. Starts qualifying on Tuesday, to finally make the main event on Saturday...if you have survived and qualified, for 1500$...if you win.

Chili Bowl today pays 10,000 to win, but few years back was very very low payday(under 2000 to win) & they still had 250+ Midgets on site going for it.....Today, you'll have to spread more than the winning share to RENT a car that has the capability to win and spend the whole week there!!!!!

Bowman Grey, $650 to win for freaking Nascar Mods...... Definitly not the cherry on the sunday....but place is full of cars....

Volusia and East Bay, are not famous for big purses either, but very well establish and not on verge of closing shop.

Remember in early 2000, with it's new owner, PCS had probably the biggest purses in whole state of Fla, lowest cars and fans count!!!!

Early 2000, Milk Bowl in Thunder Rd paid 3500 to win, up to 63 showed up, today, 10,000$ to win take all he's got to have 50!!!!!

In mid 2000, PASS held a 400 laps race in Wiscasset, Me, The Big Dawg, 100,000 to win, 45+- cars showed up.

The new FAST Series, has a decent purse, how come there are not 50 cars showing up????

Big purses are not the only thing attracting big numbers of cars, and low purses are not the only thing keeping them away either. And if you have to rely on purses to keep racing, at the hobby level, you cannot afford either that sport or that class.

This kinda sums up my feelings about the sport in general today and why it has pretty much lost all of the magic for me. I come from a blue collar background and my heroes when I was a kid were guys like Frankie Schneider, Al Tasnady, Bud Olson, Buzzie Reutiman etc. The guys who made their living plying their trade of building, maintaining and racing on the local short tracks across the country. Yes, I loved the sights and sounds and the excitement of the RACING, but for me my pride of accomplishment was to be able to do what I loved for a LIVING, to be able to generate enough money with what I EARNED with the car to cover the expenses and meet my basic needs. Of course it never did work out that way for me. I never had 2 nickles to rub together myself. I made bare sustenance wages and had to learn to do things myself to field a car because I never had anyone give me ANYTHING, no sponsors, no sugar daddy's, there was sure no money to be had in my family! I was able to hang on for a couple decades, at least in the early days I made enough to keep the balls in the air from one season to the next. Today, except for the elite pro series, racing has evolved to a sport for the rich man where the mere thought of even breaking EVEN, let alone making enough profit to LIVE on out of one's racing earnings is not even a pipe dream anymore. I suppose if I hit the lotto and money wasn't a problem for me anyore I would get out there and play with my toys, but it just isn't the same thing. That kind of a deal just doesn't have that magic for me, like it did when I was a kid.
Bones heal, chicks dig scars, pain is temporary but GLORY is FOREVER!! Or, the older I get the faster I WAS!

Well said Ted. Been there too. I love racing to this day, but the fun is fading fast. Just like Orlando and N.S.S. they have replaced the regular Mod's for the E-Mods as they are called for the one's that have supported them in the past. They have 3 races, that's right 3 whole races this year for the regular Mod's (April, May, Sept.). So much for Donnie Nerone selling a bunch of tires to me this season , because i was not shy about putting on new one's on. Just like the E-Mods. They don't need race gas if they run the crate engine, just stop at the local gas station anf fill it up with 93. No need for high dollar race gas from the track.
