You are so right Ron.... its a total different world now.....and when a track tries to "Reverse Order" (even 6 positions), drivers/owners cry like crazy.
If I owned a track, there would be heats (no time trials) and every feature would be TOTAL reverse order PERIOD.
Fans want to see who has the ABILITY to come from the rear, get a position or two each lap. Fenton did it, Gill, Leroy and all those that you named in your post did it and they didn't have radios to help out either.
We will never see races like back then and that's a shame....I hate to see all the fast cars start in the first 4 or 5 rows, but when one of the fast boys gets scratched for whatever, he's the one I watch to see if he has what it takes to come up through the field.
Not taking anything away from todays drivers, but I sure miss the days as you had explained. It was alot more exciting and the stands were full.
Thank a Police Officer for what they do........... OSF:

      Ron Abney translation

As a public service, here is the english translation of post #45 on this thread.

In years past, I've seen fields of 30+ cars starting races at many of our local tracks. I know there are other veteran fans who are still alive and can remember this era.

There was a wide variety of experienced racers who could start last in these large fields, and still be successful by passing in the outside groove.

Can you believe this was how it used to be?

Modern drivers feel that if they start on the pole, they are entitled to win. What happened?

We also never had the idea of using the "bump and run", or of kamikaze lane changes where getting into the bottom lane was always the only priority. Equally offensive are the tactics of driving in the grass to move your opponent from the bottom lane, or waiting on directions from a spotter instead of using the drivers judgement and insticts.

If the quality of modern racing was more like the olden days, perhaps the attendance would be greater like it was in the olden days also.

Considering the price of a modern, professionally built racecar, one would expect them to be able to run side by side with greater ease.

I certainly hope there are still some racers, who are as talented as the stars from the past, who can still start in the rear and get to the front. Anyone can win from the pole.

Getting the popcorn out now. Boneman must have a bunch of free time. How long did the translation take? You know though, it loses something in the translation.

              HOT DAMN, what a shocker!

I like the old Ron better. In the old days, Ron would be driving up/over to Bone's house to pull him outside and have Bone count his own teeth cause the total would be about to change.

Oh well, back to quiet times on the old board.

Damn, I was really waiting for the sky to come down on this one....

I don't disagree with Ron's post. He makes many valid points.

I'll never forget being a spectator at Hialeah in the 1974, 75, etc.. The best races occured when the top bunch of cars would line up like a train, and only one guy would jump on the outside and work his way past the whole group. Bobby Brack was the guy who could do it! He started in the back and put on a hell of a good show. What I would give to have one of those races on tape...
