CCMP tried double file restarts in the 150 lapper last weekend. I was wondering what everybody thought of it. Do you think it played a roll in a lot of the torn up race cars or do you think it was good for the fans?

Double file restarts at CCMP

From a Fans point of view I thought it was fun and exciting. About the torn up cars I think it was a lot to do with the lack of give and take from the cars side by side. I hated to see that many cars torn up but think the restarts this way are exciting and could be better if there was a littel more give and take from the racers especialy early in the race.
But I am not out there in the car trying to go for the win, thats just my opinion from the stands.

Double file restarts are the way to go, but you need at two groove race track to race on. Get some grip up in that second groove would make for better racing and a lot less tore up cars. Races at some 3/8 mile tracks, one used some orange colored rosin, the other used coke syrup in the second groove and both places had two grooves to race on and if set up right actually faster on the outside. When you can run outside , everybody doesn't have to try to get to the bottom, saves a lot of tore up cars...

Gary, I'm glad you got to meet Dustin and I hope you had a good time at the race. I couldn't really watch what was going on mid pack on the restarts bacause I was spotting but I did think that was the most yellows I ever saw on the first lap after a restart. I don't know what would happen if they would have had 30 cars.
Todd, I think it was the first day of class and the drivers though it was a "crash course".

double file restarts are fine on a 2 and a half mile like daytona and with professional drivers with unlimited funds . it doesnt work on short tracks . its too costly to the racer .track owners should be doing everything possible to save the racer money . if the fans want to see wrecks theres always crash-o-rama or pull up a lawnchair beside i-4 .

From my prospective!
I edited the race today and the only crash that I could atribute to the double file restarts was on a restart when the 10x came out if 4 and got loose and collected a bunch of cars. To be fair I think that would have been just as bad with a single file restart. They are all bunched up at the start anyway. I am thinking its a mindset. If you focus on your line and stay there it shouldn't matter. Another thing that doesn't help is some guys think they can win a race in the first few laps. By the time they got to that point in a 150 lap race the field had dwindled down to I think 9 cars and several of those had their front ends gone. The double file restarts are better for the fan and I think when the drivers learn how to deal with it it'll get better. What Chassisdude said would help. The tack on the second groove is the answer. Last year they put some tack on and the racing was excellent till it wore off. even the 4 cyllinder cars were faster. Bob...

It looks to me like Straightup is more interested in high-speed freight trains, than in actual racing.
Since double-file restarts "won't work", try explaining how they managed to do it at Islip Speedway, a 1/5 mile track (MUCH smaller than CCMP), or the hundreds of 1/4 mile, 1/3 mile and 3/8 mile tracks.
The answer is that racers that grow up on double-file starts know how to handle themselves in thoses situations. If you drive like a meathead on the inside lane and bounce off everyone on your outside, your day will come that you are on the receiving end.
Racers today, especially the young ones that run hundreds of practice laps, staying STRICTLY on the bottom will have NO clue what to do in the outside lane. They will bulldoze YOU to the top side, but wouldn't venture there themselves.
It comes down to 2 things:
Learn how to RACE, not just how to drive fast.
Have RESPECT for fellow competitors. This one has been missing for far too long.

Quite honestly, the key to double file restarts is to LEARN how to race on the racetrack. Getting accustomed to starting like that because most folks down here are used to single file freight train restarts. As a former competitor, I myself prefer double file restarts because then I have that opportunity to start on top and might be able to pass on the get-go. i.e. makes for a more competitive event..
On the last note, far too often these days, the respect for a fellow competitor has been lost. That is something that must be brought back into play. Quite honestly from the grandstand view, a double file restart is much more exciting and makes for a much more competitive event. Hmm did where did I hear that before...
Have a great day all...

Jerry said a mouth full with one word. Respect. But the problem wasn't the young ones bulldozing anyone to the top side it was more of the veterans not showing respect and trying to squeeze the guy on the bottom a half a car below the ripples.
One time when the young one moved the veteran up to the second groove so the young one could have all 4 tires on the track the veteran lost his cool and respect. Under yellow he tried to destored the young ones car. Not freaken cool. They both restarted on the front row and in 25 laps that young one was going to put that veteran a lap down but the veterian again lost respect and tried a veteran move and break checked the leader but he locked his rear tires and spun his self out and got sent to the rear. If he would have used respect and heathed the blue flag he might have gained some respect. I know a ton of fans told me that they used to have respect for that driver before that race. You have to give respect to gain respect.
Another problem is what flraceguy said. If you are running 10th you probabily have a 10th place car. On the restart you are on the 5th row and in your mind you think you are going to be 5th in about a lap. Well it ain't going to happen. It is a bigger problem with the guys starting on the bottom because they ain't going to let anybody in. So they are going into the corner harder than they should. Three cars ahead they had to check up and now guess what. Big pile up because you can't stop the car cause you drove in to deep.
Don't get me wrong. We don't have a problem with double file restarts. We restarted on the outside 5 times. Never touched the guy on the bottom once. Ran two by two for several laps on the outside until we could make the pass or drop in behind. And we restarted on the inside countless times and when the guy on the outside respected our lane there wasn't a problem. When the guy on the outside tried to put us below the ripples well than he got what he gave.
P. S. The two youngest ones in the race finished one and two with pretty much clean cars except for the damage done by a "veteran" under yellow. That should show you who is giving respect. That is why they get it back. Like I said. You have to give it to gain it.

Speaking about saying a mouth full - What Mr. South 59 just said is the most honest and correct statement I have seen on KARNAC in many moons.
I wasn't there, but I could picture exactly what he was saying.... double file restarts are not a problem... not knowing what to do or just not doing the correct thing is the problem. I like how he put the guy running 10th is on the outside 5th row and kinda forgets he is running 10th and thinks he can jump in there and perhaps get a 4th out of the deal - AIN'T SO DUDE, you are a 10th running car at the restart so don't expect 5-6 cars to disappear and POOF, you are up front.
Mr. South 59 - glad to hear about the finish for those that raced clean and knew how to handle the double file restarts... I like your style!Thank a Police Officer for what they do........... OSF:

The only time this year I've not seen double file restarts add to the race was the Governor's Cup, where they had the lapped cars start on the inside and the fast cars on the lead lap on the outside. Abandoning that idea mid-race was a very, very smart move.
