  • SpeedWorld Friday night

So my brother calls me at a quarter to 6 (in the evening) on Friday and asks if I wanna go to the 50-lapper tonight (6/12, Friday night). Ehh, sure, why not, I tell the girlfriend. We load up and get going from the Disney area (US 192 and US 27) right after 6:00pm. Turn on the GPS to see how long it'll take us and how far it is.

One hour and seven minutes to drive 57 miles one way, most of it on the 417 and 408, and over $4.00 in tolls one way. If we'd have taken I-4 to 50 (Colonial), it would've taken us at least two hours in Friday-night downtown stop-n-gpo traffic.

Get to the track at just about 7:15, Bandeleros are running. Four - count 'em all ON ONE HAND...- FOUR freakin' oversized go-carts...? *Sigh*...I figure we're in for a looooong night...

Trucks get out on the track. Not a bad race. Glad to see Scott Reeves run a good race. But again...a really short field.

Legends. 10 cars for 25 laps?? And I think only six actually finished. Thought this class had TONS of cars in this area.

What happened to all the Super Stocks? Cuddy? Only about nine or ten cars, pretty uneventful.

Then the Super Late Models. Only 17 cars - but some darn good ones showed up. Wayne Anderson, BJ, Winchell, Freed, Colangelo, Bowers, Rogers, Finney, Clouser...not too bad a crowd. But - the outside groove was slick. From the grandstands, you could see water coming up through the track. Not a bad race, either, until Wayne started looking like he was mirror-driving. Winchell was really the only guy to try the leaders on the outside, but Wayne'd put him up out of the groove. Not sure what happened to Freed, but he started loose and I think he may have flattened that LR in the process, because he just went backwards and eventually parked. It was REALLy neat to see the old guys - Anderson, Winchell, and Rogers, put on a show and learn them youngin's a thing or two, until Anderson spun by himself. Was hoping to see Winchell get the win, but restarting on the outside I think did him in.

Minis. What can I say...? *sigh*...not sure what went on between the 81 and the 51 (Cody Blair and Jim Erb?), but for a seven car race, that was the sorriest excuse I've seen for sportsmanship in racing in a loooong time - especially for a mini-stock race. There was no need for that mess. The "24 Hours of Bithlo) finally ended after 15 laps instead of the scheduled 25.

We left before the Strictly Stock feature; had to get home because we needed to get up early Saturday. We took 50 across to I-4, then I-4 to 192 and home. Seven miles shorter, and about the same amount of time due to traffic lights and stops.

    Some observations:
    1) I don't like double-file restarts.

    2) Bring back heat races. More action for the fans, more track time for drivers.

    3) After the third caution by the same two drivers, send 'em both packin'. Park both cars. That mini stock race was ridiculously long because of the same two cars.

    4) Hated to see Bonehead get caught up in that wreck off of four. Glad he got it fixed and back out on the track before the race continued. Still not sure what happened, as I was watching the 51 and the 81 beat the crap out of each other on the track.

    5) No coolers allowed in grandstands?

    6) $3.00 for a 20oz bottle of Coca Cola. *Three dollars*. The convenience stores are only like $1.25-$1.50. Hell, even at Disney World, they're only $2.50! And the menu board has "small" and "large" size drinks listed. I asked for a Large, because I saw the two different-sized cups sitting on the counter. The girl at the window tells me, "Oh, the soda only comes in the bottle." Then why are there two different sized cups and prices listed for "small" and "large"? And why are there Pepsi cups if they only serve Coca Cola products...?

    7) The grandstand seating - the wood - needs replaced *bad*.

    8) The entire grandstand probably needs to be replaced. We sat in the top row, just to the left of the announcer box as you look coming into the track. The very top railing - and various other places I looked - are rusted out/rusted through and don't look very healthy.

    9) I like the fact that there's a "Family" section.

    10) Put in a playground behind the turn four grandstands or *something*.

    11) No Orlando Speedworld shirts at the "souvenir" trailer? Hell, all I did see there was 90% candy/sweet stuff.

    12) Did I mention that I don't like double file restarts? It really kinda screws the guys on the outside line.

i agree 100 percent , double file restarts are stupid . if thats what the powers that be want , maybe they should be required to help pay the costs of repairing cars that get torn up just for their pleasure . all it does is cause wrecks that would not happen with single file starts , as we have seen way too much of that this year . the object is to save the racer money , get more cars to show up , more fans in the stands , and put on a great show . but fascar doesnt see it that way , thats why nobody wants to race .

the outside line at OSW is perfectly viable. as long as the track is NOT weeping. and the track is going to keep weeping as long as the ground outside the track slopes towards the wall ....

you saw Denny Johns at the beginnning of the Super Stock race? he stayed out there for what, 3 laps? and was running a lane too high?

i figure if Denny starts to get the hang of being out there and starts running the lane he should be running, he could be fun to watch.

Hated to see Bonehead get caught up in that wreck off of four.

      yeah, that was pretty pointless.

there's some guys that could use a remedial driving class.

double file restarts make for better racing

all it does is cause wrecks that would not happen with single file starts

double file restarts dont cause the wrecks, drivers not using their head is what causes the wrecks

I quit fishing because there was no one handing out money at the docks when i got back. Why did you quit racing?

Its in the eye of the beholder, J-mac. I thought the SLM 50 was an excellent race.

The only other race I saw was mine, and I can attest that it was the roughest, dumbest 10 car race that we have had for years. There were others besides 51 and 81 who were dishing out the abuse. Its odd, our class is usually pretty calm. I went to see Kelly Jarrett afterwards, and we decided that we are probably the only two mini drivers who are still on talking terms.

Double file restarts are a big improvement. They give you an opportunity to pass; that is all a racer wants. You win some and you lose some, but at least you have a chance. As far as "screwing the guy on the outside", I suggest you visit NSS where the outside tends to be the preferred place to start.

I don't pretend to speak for the Cuddys in any way, but I do know (second or third hand) they feel persecuted and hounded by tech. I can't blame them; recent big fights in tech, like the chassis dyno fiasco, always take away some of the fun. I think those guys are old-school racers: colorful and intense. They show up with 3-4 good-looking, competitive cars. It would be a loss to the show if they continue to stay away.

The Legends are split between Speedworld, Auburndale and CCMP, so the Friday night car count has suffered, but seems to be slowly rebuilding.

Bone - I wasn't complaining about the *racing*. That was probably some of the best SLM racing I'd seen at that place in a long time. Like I said, I was certainly pulling for Winchell to get 'er done, but I still think he got hosed having to start on that outside lane every restart. And, as far as I counted, every Mini Stock was involved in a caution at one point or another, and every car had to tag the rear at some point. Glad to see you're OK and that you made it back out on the track.

As for the souvenir trailer, I just kinda walked by it and that was all that I saw - the candy and stuff. No, I didn't stop and ask, but I will certainly look for a OSW shirt next time we get over there ;-)

Again, the "no coolers" policy and the pricing at the concession stand could probably use an overhaul. Not sure if OSW sets those prices, or the vendors, but it's certainly very high. Like I said, $3.00 for a 20oz. Coke is a bit much. This ain't Disney World...LOL...

So...Todd...my dad said something that I didn't know about...I thought you had stayed away from OSW, but then heard your name as driving the #6.7 car in Strictly Stocks (that feature was starting as we were leaving). He said something about your Ford Probe or something was illegal or something to that effect. Care to elaborate? ;-) LOLOL...you can PM details if you want...

Here's another comment on my Friday night adventure:

So as we were on our way out, I stopped by the concession stand to get a cup of ice - for my soda in my cooler that sat in the car. Guy says, "$2.00 for a cup of ice." I thought he was kidding - until he held out his hand and I asked, "Really?" He says, "Yeah, we have to pay for the (get this - PAPER) cups." Hell, I only paid $1.88 for TEN POUNDS of ice at Wal-Mart on the way over!

I thought you had stayed away from OSW

couple of issues, the most important of which was that i wasn't working so i wasn't going to spend money on a car that wasn't going to make anything at all. my RR slave cylinder was shot and blowing brake fluid all over the place. $60 for a new slave cylinder or ~$100 for a loaded caliper, not hard to figure out which i'm going to do.

He said something about your Ford Probe or something was illegal or something to that effect. Care to elaborate? ;-)

not sure what he's talking about. i don't know how i could be any more "illegal" than Tim Walters or Neil Kirby ( both v6 Probes ), William Hindman with his fuel injected + factory header 4.6L Mark VIII or Jim Erb with his 2001 Acura TL with 3.0L v6.

if he means that FASCAR is going out of their way to discourage us from going to NSS, ya, that applies to all of us.

if he's talking about the brake light, no i don't have one. and i'm not going to put one in. they can keep their trophies and their points and that isn't going to change until they get serious about fixing the Strictly Stock rules and building the class back up again.

but that's all old news that's been run into the ground.

do you just like stirring the pot or what?

No, no....not stirring the pot at all....sorry. Just didn't know the story behind why you weren't running, and Dad assumed that I knew...LOL...I don't know the rules of the class, so I really didn't know why cars would be considered "illegal" if they met the entire rules. If a car is available to the general public with factory options, why would it be "illegal" if you can go to a showroom and purchase it that way? FASCAR just don't want any "performance" cars/parts, or what? I'm just asking, because I don't know the entire rules of that class.

I guess I just don't understand why the same sanctioning organization that runs both tracks would discourage anyone from running at both tracks if they wanted to. Shouldn't the rulebook read the same at both places if they're run by the same people/organization?

There was alot of games being played in the slm race on restarts.Wayne was probably a little annoyed by the start of race and carried on from there. I would liked to see Joe win the thing. They've been getting the car better everytime I see it run.
Todd you should set up a creative brake light just because.

I think it would be cool to mount school bus style lights on a Ford Probe. You let off the gas and the lights flash yellow and you touch the brakes and they flash red. Think it would fit the rules?

you not getting my joke makes me a sad panda.

I don't know the rules of the class

                          http://www.newsmyrnaspeedway.org/pdfs/09rules.pdf

Strictly Stock starts on page 28.

so I really didn't know why cars would be considered "illegal" if they met the entire rules.

"Must be V-8 or 6 cylinder, full sized, American made
car for the Strictly Stock Division."

i've heard there's an LTD that runs NSS. if so, it's probably the only car at either track that is "full sized". a Monte Carlo has always been considered to be a "mid sized" car by GM. yes, even one from 1976. if you wanted a "full size" Chevy you'd have to be running a Caprice or Impala.

the Mark VIII, like a Riviera ( except 67-76 which would be Full Size ), would be a "Sport Luxury Coupe".

you'll notice that there's a lot of foreign brand stuff at OSW which violates the "American Made" clause.

"Completely stock engine for that year, make, model.
Stock carburetor; 4 barrel maximum size.
                          "

they have no rules provisions at all for EFI and the last American factory production car that i'm aware of that had a carb was produced in 1992.

i could go further but there's little point.

you don't even want to get me started on the Enduro rules.

Come on now guys , it took a long time to get double file re-starts implemented , don't complain too loud or we'll lose them . A driver has just as much oportunity to pass with a double file re-start as a single file . Probably more so . I guess OSW has weepers , which would make it tougher , but no more so than starting behind someone who isn't going to give you the bottom lane .
The ONLY reason double file re-starts were brought in at OSW ( and NSS i think ) was to give the fans a more exciting show . And thats reason enough to keep doing it .
