Watch the chassis flex. On dirt, the center of gravity transfers to the right rear without a wing on, pulling up the left front tire. With a wing, it transfers to the left rear, and can lift the right front tire. The wing TOTALLY plants the inside edge of the car, more or less MAKING it turn.
On pavement, the wing will plant the cars in the corners, but create huge aero drag numbers on the straights.
Which is why the winged Supers have the hydraulic wings. They lay flat on the straights to reduce drag, then pop up in the corners for cornering stability. The best of both worlds.

Yup, the wing plants it hard. I ran practice a few weeks ago at East Bay in my mini sprint (with the wings) and I set up my GoPro to record the left rear shock movement. The instant I cranked the car in and the air caught the wing it slammed the left rear down and crushed the bumpstop on the shock. And it stays planted down until you straighted up out of the turn. Without the wing it would likely just about top out the left rear shock.

Wings & Non Wings

Wings are great for airplanes! I do not attend the winged sprint car shows such as wORLD OF OUTLAWS. They run time trials, run heat races, run a dash, run a feature and when I get their results, I just scroll to the bottom. Usually the fastest time car wins the race because he starts on the pole. Someone may lead for a couple of laps and Lap 3-30 and that is it. Someone may get a plus for passing 6 or 8 cars. That's not a race! Non winged dirt and asphalt are much more exciting and the days when there were no wings in Florida, racing was much better with more cars in the field who were capable of winning. So today I'm not spending my dollars at watching winged sprints in Florida. Heading for Indiana (Lawrenceburg and Kokomo and Gas City) great non winged races on dirt!!

Once again, Don has his facts twisted.

I personally witnessed wings on at Golden Gate in either 82 or 83.... not 91.

The ONE RACE against the northern Supers was actually a series of several races, at several tracks, over multiple years. Pretty much dominated by guys like Ollie Silva in SUPERS... not a Fla car with a 318.

As for Buzzie & Cagle..... they ran full seasons of Modifieds from about April to October up there. They ran here in the winter months. Although they were always listed as being from Zephyrhills and Tampa, they spent 8 months a year there, compared to 4 down here. Add Wayne Reutimann and Gary Balough to the same scenario.

Don't let Dons version of history sway you from the TRUTH about history.

I was the promoter at golden gate those years and didn't run wings.
I was the promoter in Lakeland in 91 and we rai a stars race there with wings 1 time.
The TBARA was running wings in 91 but I never ran them till NSS in 1999.
You cant be that stupid to think you can play in that field just keep ur up north stats

It sure seems that a promoter could control a lot of issues by running those small, early style (all dimensions could be specific) wings and also controlling the angle of the thing.

For instance, could you not make up for cheap/hard tires with a small wing?

And/or cheap motors?

Additionally, some fans probably feel "cheated" if there is not a wing on the car.

Please some one post a wing sprint from 81 2 or 3 at golden gate and save jerry. a super did practice there one time with a wing. The wing on that Orlando car I bought from Stan and put it on my mod and used it in Ga.
I think that was a race promoted in the winter buy Rocky Fisher??
You wont find any wing shows at any track that I was at before 99.

Buzz first car that he owned was 00.
His dad told him that car was dubble nothing so he made it 00.
Buzz raced dirt mods for a few years in NY but most of his racing was done right here in centeral Fa.
Cagle on the other hand did most of his racing in NY and came down here and ran latemodel at eastbay
He quit racing here in the late 80s

I didn't realize Buzzie and Cagle were from up North and wintered in FL. I always thought they were from here and summered up there :-) I guess it's which side of the fence you're on.

I can't speak for Buzzie but Cagle was from here, but moved up there because the money was better and then would come back down here to race in the winters.
