Personally myself,I'd call it Bradenton Spedway. It's where the track is.Full Throttle is too gimmicee.
I don't agree much with the way he ran PGS,but I'm glad that Kevin Williams will at least be keeping a racing venue alive, even if its 100 miles away in /at DeSoto.
The Charlotte County Airport Authority (ccaa),but the screws to Williams and fans of Punta Gorda Speedway. The airport cut his parking in half, when they made the improvements to Piper rd.,it turned PGS into virtually a soupbowl. No drainage which caused flooding in their parking lot.Williams had to cancel a lot of shows because of it.
What made me think about what CCAA was doing, was reading rumors of the Bush family wanting a private air strip or field put in,now that George Sr. lives in the area full time now.The fix was in for the track to go away.
I hope that Williams will consider a few things, and since I have a big mouth I'll throw my 2 cents in.
First,I hope he makes improvements to those old and decrepit stands. They need upgraded badly.
Second,it seems That Florida United Promoters, wants NOTHING to do with Williams or Yoho ay Showtime speedway. They should pool their resources, with maybe the couple that operate Lake City speedway, and start their own racing tour. Now that New Smyrna is a NASCAR affiliated track, and the Hart family doesn't work well and play with others,Williams should start a promoters tour, where they could offer bigger purses to the drivers, and bigger promotions for racing fans.
Since Full Throttle and Showtime speedways are within 35 miles of each other, they better work together,or they will go the way of PGS.
Third,I hope one thing at FUPS does, that Williams didn't at PGS,iswhen he has a late model show, that he has autograph sessions for the fans. It's cool to get a chance to talk to racers before the race.I've enjoyed talking to Joe Boyd,Anthony campi and others.I hope Williams considers this at Full Trottle or whatever he calls it.I wish him good luck,as he will need it...
Don't no where you got you're info about FUPS NOT wanting anything to do with kevin or yoho, I believe it's the other way around sir. Hopefully one day they will all get together, and it will be a awesome touring series, and give this sport the shot in the arm it needs, TRACKS working together ,thats what i'm hoping for
Tony is correct, Rick Williams has gone out of his way to try and get races at Showtime and PGS, neither owner is interested. And now with Kevin owning Desoto, it doesn't look like the FUPS will be racing their either.
Uhhh, no, it's not. It never *has* been a "Super Speedway". The definition of "super speedway" is a "track that is greater than one mile in length". Or, at least it *used* to be, before all these "intermediate speedways" (i.e., Vegas/Texas/Charlotte/Atlanta/Kansas/Chicago/Kentucky clones) started popping up. DeSoto, being a 3/8ths mile, or a 1/3-mile, depending on who you talk to, falls well short of being a "super speedway". By definition, it's still a "short track" (i.e., a track less than one mile in length). To me, though, Lakeland, although a 3/4 mile and again, by definition, a "short track", was too big for any real "short track" racing, just like Richmond.
DESOTO SPEEDWAY....The South's Fastest Short Track!
Keep the name the same. Bring in an exorcist to get rid of the coodies and let the new owners prove their worth by running a good show and treating the racers fair. Maybe you will even get all of the locals (including Arcadia) John ran off to come back. Also, work out rules and schedules with St. Pete, good promoters work together, not against each other. Let the race director run the show, keep the owners out of making calls and tell them to be promoters ONLY. Sell the show. Bring in the community, it's their track. Full Throttle Speedway is not a good name, too Micky Mouse. It's DeSoto Speedway, forever.
When Pat says you're going down the wrong path, you really might want to pay attention Kevin. Pat is connected to Desoto like very few other people have been.
But, you're going to stick with that idiotic track name no matter what anyone says aren't you. So be it, but you'd do well to follow the rest of his advice.
The expectation for success may be there...but let's leave the future to the fortune tellers and gypsies. Everyone is throwing around words like "saved" and "turned around". There's a chance they will fall on their ass just like the previous two owners did. I'm hoping not. I'm hoping they can bring the track back to the status it once enjoyed. But I learned a long time ago that the jobs not done until the job is done. And also, try to remember why the majority of people, at least the ones who post on this message board, are against changing the name of the speedway to something from some reality TV networks reject pile of show titles.
They do want the track to succeed and think that naming it "Full Throttle Speedway" is a huge mistake. Both marketing wise AND the fact that it's a slap in the face to the tracks long, racing heritage and it's nation-wide recognition as "Desoto Speedway - The South's Fastest Short Track!"
1. The owners picked the name.. they like it.
2. they paid for it.
3. It's all LEGAL...
That still doesn't stop it from being a bad decision.
