If you buy into a place with an esteemed brand, "Golden Gate Speedway" for example, then you would be nuts to change it. However, if you are buying damaged goods, then you better gid rid of all links to the recent past.

How are you going to win back a fan who has an ax to grind with De Soto Speedway? Don't you think you'll have a better chance if you can say that those days are gone, there is new management and new ownership in place?

    Go "Full Throttle!"
Total change is needed! Agree 100%

The answer is obvious. If they're dead set on changing the name, then why not use the other favorite race track name that's recently become available. How about Sunshine Speedway. We can even go with The New Sunshine Speedway.

          Technically....

Both the drag strip and the oval track ran under the Desoto Memorial Speedway banner back when the complex was first built by Stanley Schwartz and Gene Tharpe. When Margi (Jerry King)got it they dropped the Memorial from the oval track but kept it at the dragstrip. When Stimus bought it, he added his name to Desoto Speedway. When Musick bought it at the auction, he of course dropped the Stimus part and it was just DS again. When John got it something made him change the name to Desoto SUPERspeedway.......another of life's great mysteries.

And now I guess it's gonna be Full Throttle.

And I think it really sucks.

Yer right EZ. It may be already officially named but WTF do you mean wasting energy? Everybody knows that public opinion on a message board always weighs heavily on a promoters mind and they ALWAYS cave to the wants of the people as expressed through rants and raves posted to about them.

Only my professional opinion from noticing the New Full Throttle track logo. I believe their minds are made up.

I thought the name Showtime was dumb, but it has grown on me and I kinda like it now. I researched racetrack names and the ones that are not named after a city or county pretty much stand out. I also like tracks named after highways, like I-35 speedway.

Senor Jones correctly pointed out that De Soto was named after a 14'th century Spanish explorer (thank you Wikipedia). Since that name is so popular with KARNAC readers, I'd suggest we so honor a few other explorers from that helped to settle this state.

For example, how about "Pedro Menéndez de Avilés Raceway Park"?

              Pánfilo de Narváez Speedbowl?

Tristán de Luna y Arellano founded Pensacola colony, so 5 Flags should be renamed in his honor.

Nonsense aside, I also like the non-location names: Golden Gate, 5 Flags, Silver Dollar, Boss Hogg, even Bubba Raceway Park. I hope they stick with Full Throttle.

                Wikiwhat?

                Who needs Wikipedia?
I grew up about a mile from where he landed.

Most of those other tracks are also well-known by their city/town specific, geographic location......Tampa, Pensacola and Ocala. Just another angle as to why my argument makes perfect sense. It would help those "new" fans you mentioned find the track.

                Check the polls.

"Full Throttle" sucks amongst the common man vote.

                DESOTO SPEEDWAY
THE ONE AND ONLY NAME FOR IT!

Sorry, I thought that if I used Bobby Deihl tactics I might be better received.

                    Desoto Name Change

Changing the name isnt the issue. If any of us were on the inside operating any speedway except a very few select ones, none and I mean "NONE" of them are making enough profit to sufficiently support them, take care of maintenance, future captial improvements and pay higher purses.

Changing then name wont help the economy which is the real issue. If you spoke to every track owner one on one, track operators will tell you they are barely breaking even or if at best a minimal profit on a good night.

Rent, mortgages, taxes, Insurance, utilities Food and beverage costs etc dont go away or get reduced Fans and racer count drops as result of disposable income being scarce.

I dont know about you guys, but its all we can do to meet the expenses of our race team schedule, and extremly hard to obtain sponsors on the short track level, which ultimately is the domino effect down to the fan who is struggling to pay for the fuel to get to the gate and then pay to get in. Its all relative.

                        Nope, we just think fast.

I'm an uncommon man and I think it is cool.

How 'bout back to DeSoto *Memorial* Speedway
J-Mac is right. If we go to the old school name, suddenly it will be 1979 again and Trickle, Sennecker and Hanley will probably show up.

                          Buccaneer Speedway

                          Buccaneer motorsports park

                          Buccaneer Raceway Park

                          Greater Tampa Motorsports Complex

I could come up with new names for days!

I still call Ocala Speedway........Ocala Speedway.
Normalcy is a myth. what is perfectly normal for the Cheetah, Becomes absolute chaos for the Antelope.

I think we can all agree with that. Let's hope we don't ever have to call it Closed Throttle.
We do have an indication of the willingness of the new owners to listen to the fans though, take a look at the current pole results for changing the name. Overwhelming numbers to keep the Desoto name. Yet they're changing it anyway. I hope these guys aren't going to be the usual Florida track owners, the official motto of which is... Shut Up And Sit Down, We Know What's Best For Racing
