you know, it's not an unusual bargaining strategy to put forward several ideas ( none of which the other party may care for ) but to have one point that is so outrageous that it will never be accepted.
what is the reason for the outrageous proposal? to create a smoke screen ( get people wound up enough about something you intend to sacrifice anyways and they're likely to miss a lot of other stuff ) to distract from your actual goal and to provide a fall back point at the things that you actually want to which you can "compromise".
the "poison pill" that John is trying to slip through here are the Desoto seal bolts.
questions:
what other tracks are going to honor Desoto seals? if you show up at SGMP or Punta Gorda or Slinger or Winchester or Pensacola ( it wouldn't surprise me if FASCAR will honor them ), what do you think the tech man is going to say to you? "What the hell is a Desoto seal and why do you think I'm going to let you run it at my track. Factory GMPP seals work just fine". you're going to spend five thousand dollars on a motor that you aren't going to be able to travel with.
how long will John continue to sell 604's at below normal retail prices?
what happens if / when other tracks start implementing similar seal bolt policies? are you going to have to have a different motor for each track?
what happens if tracks, who one year honor each others bolts, have a fight? who's going to get stuck in the middle?
what happens if the track you bought the seal bolts from closes down anyway? where ya gonna run now?
this is as far away from a "standardized" engine rule as you can get.
it doesn't embarrass me that John almost slipped this by me. it embarrasses me that i almost helped him do it. i must not be quite the Poindexter that Brokeback thinks i am.
