  • A day at Citrus

I liked a lot of things that Citrus had going on yesterday, and a few that were not so good.

I loved the idea of starting the races in the daylight, as it was a real nice day outside. Running the big race first was also a plus, being that the temperature drops quickly when the sun goes down. This left us with the option of leaving when/if we wanted without missing the 100 lapper or freezing through it. We wound up staying right to the end.

One of the Not-so-goods... the PA system there SUCKS. I don't remember it being THAT bad before. It surely needs an upgrade.

The fields of cars, for the most part, was excellent. But, whoever allowed the 15 lap TWO Truck race to happen made a mistake. You'd think that 2 Trucks alone out there could handle themselves, but there was still a caution flag when 1 of them spun out. We were kind of expecting a roof-top dance and some whooping, hollering, and a smokey burnout after the "big" win, but luckily we were spared such a display.

The support classes there are very competetive, and most guys handle themselves really well, for such a short track with a lot of contact. They are built with a bunch of big old iron nerf bars all around, which makes them almost indestructable. Promoters... read this as cars that can come back next week, instead of spending 2 months on the jackstands because they can't afford $2K for an ABC body replacement. Build 'em like tanks, and they will be back next week. If you biuld 'em too fragile, far too many will be left in the garages.

The $13.00 admission was very much a surprise. I was expecting to pay $20, was hoping for $15, and was pleasntly surprised when they asked for $13. Me and Roger commented (to the ticket sellers) on what a deal that was... they told us it was the first comment of the day that wasn't a complaint. I guess the regular Citrus fans are spoiled by low prices all the time. Another hint to Promoters.... jacking up your prices too high will have lots of people staying home NOT buying your Hot Dogs and coffee.

I don't know where they found the announcer for the FAST Series, but please lose him quickly. Might be a great guy, but I wasn't a fan of his style, and general lack of knowledge about these drivers. Never once did I hear mention of the different rule packages, what was done to equalize them out, or even who-had-which powerplants in them. I thought this was a big selling point in this series, but I never heard it mentioned a single time.

Wayne Anderson did the smartest thing a series Promoter could have done. The top 4 were offered a chance to start up front, or take the challenge fo starting in the back for an extra $500 bonus if they win. Wayne took the challenge, and wound up winning from 27th (without a scratch on the car from what I could tell). Steve Dorer also manned-up and took the challenge too, saying "I didn't want Wayne to feel all alone back there".

I have really high hopes for the rest of this season. So far this year, I've seen several classes at 4 different tracks, and the competition at each has been very good. Seeing Josh Richards come from 17th to win, Anderson doing it from 27th, Dale McDowell from 29th to 6th, I think there were 8 different leaders in the PASS South race.... I've already seen more passing this year than some entire years combined.

2010 could be an outstanding year for racing in Florida...!

Sorry we missed you and Roger last night. We were in the pits to see friends and register my car number for this season.
We hope to have a little fun there this year. The announcer for the FAST race was a friend of Wayne Anderson who drove about 7 hours to make this event as a favor to Wayne(as per what he said in victory lane).
The sound system in the pit stands was really LOUD. Maybe they should put some of that volumn over to the other side. Food was great too......as usual.

RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.

The reason for the 15 lap - 2 truck race, as it was explained to me.....

The trucks asked to race at Desoto, John told them no. So several of the truck teams called Citrus asking for a place to race. As soon as Citrus scheduled the race, John had a change of heart and decided to schedule on top of Citrus, again.
I think it was a good thing that Citrus rewarded the 2 drivers that kept their word and showed up with 15 laps of track time.

What a class act King John is... Kudos to Citrus for allowing these guys to run and keeping their word.

The announcer sounded like Bill Desmond, who used to be the announcer for the All-Pro series (the best short series ever, especially in the 1980's until NASCRAP bought them in 1990 and ruined them) I haven't heard him in years and was surprised they got him at Citrus. I think it was him because he talked about being at the All-Pro race at Desoto in 1985 when Butch Lindley got hurt. It was kind of like listening to Ken Squier, someone who was great in their day, but now adds nothing and is just full of cliches.

18 Late Models at Desoto and 27 at Citrus, 6 days after Speedweek, not too shabby!

If that was the case with the Trucks:

              A) Yes, Citrus DID do the right thing

              B) They should have announced something to the crowd, so as not to embarrass the 2 Trucks that DID show up

              C) It's not surprising that King John pulled yet another one-sided move. This guy is something else.

                Hey Guys...

What you all are missing is the fact that John owns that track.... he can do whatever he wants to do... he can charge what he wants, he can treat the drivers and owners anyway he wants.. he can continue with broken down stands, he can chase anyone away that he wants... it is HIS track - not yours... if you want to do things differently - go buy a track and it will be YOUR track...

Bottom line - John can drive his track into the ground anyway he wants... then one day... he will have a "Used To Be a Nice Track" all to himself!

Hell, I bet he's thinking about doing what his neighbor track is doing...(Checking peoples pockets for sandwiches).

IF, when I get a track the 1st rule will be: NO STUPID RULES ALLOWED, just things that make sense.
Thank a Police Officer for what they do........... OSF:

                  Too late....

Been that way at Desoto (I refuse to use the words "Super Speedway" in conjunction with a 3/8 mile track) for a while now. Bobby's just taking tips from an old nemesis.

                  Tain't nuthin' new.

                  On a semi-unrelated note:

Even an ugly, blind dog finds a leg to hump once in a while as OSF has just proven by actually being right in his observation.....

while i wholeheartedly approve of Wayne starting from the back of the field, all reports seem to indicate that his car was head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

this is a very serious problem when Wayne is intimately involved in the running of the series. Wayne could really just be that much better of a driver. he might just have his car set up that much better. but you know what's going to be said and you know the grumbling that's going to on if this continues to happen.

as i see it, the Andersons have three choices if they want this series to last more than a couple of years:
1 - Wayne can work with the other drivers to get their cars sorted out so they are closer to his speeds
2 - he can stop racing in his own series where accusations of tech favoritism will be all to easy to make
3 - he can continue to race but must exempt himself from all awards and points

otherwise, this is going to be like every other short track or series that has owners/promoters/relatives who also compete against the regular guys.

or i could just be full of crap. you never know....

I think Wayne ought to set in the rules, like other tracks, that top 3 from last race must start the rear in the next race. That seemed to ease the tensions amoung drivers in the past...JMO

why not full field inverts plus anyone who won the last time they showed up ( to prevent people cherry picking races to keep their total points down ) to the very back?

still not going to stop the grumbling if Wayne is that much faster though.

Hey Winger Sweetie - got any photos yet for me from the Ocala Banquet so I can add them to B.J.'s story and also do you have a picture of each of your track champion for the Champion gallery at www.floridadirttracknews.com. I would love to add Ocala to it.

Hey Jane, I've already sent you photos of the champions and you have them posted. I'm not sending out pictures from the banquet. I'm just a little disappointed that I send you all these pictures and you link other photographers on your site, but not me.

Mike, it was a pleasure meeting you. Wish I'd been able to talk to you some more. I do look forward to seeing you again.
