I liked a lot of things that Citrus had going on yesterday, and a few that were not so good.
I loved the idea of starting the races in the daylight, as it was a real nice day outside. Running the big race first was also a plus, being that the temperature drops quickly when the sun goes down. This left us with the option of leaving when/if we wanted without missing the 100 lapper or freezing through it. We wound up staying right to the end.
One of the Not-so-goods... the PA system there SUCKS. I don't remember it being THAT bad before. It surely needs an upgrade.
The fields of cars, for the most part, was excellent. But, whoever allowed the 15 lap TWO Truck race to happen made a mistake. You'd think that 2 Trucks alone out there could handle themselves, but there was still a caution flag when 1 of them spun out. We were kind of expecting a roof-top dance and some whooping, hollering, and a smokey burnout after the "big" win, but luckily we were spared such a display.
The support classes there are very competetive, and most guys handle themselves really well, for such a short track with a lot of contact. They are built with a bunch of big old iron nerf bars all around, which makes them almost indestructable. Promoters... read this as cars that can come back next week, instead of spending 2 months on the jackstands because they can't afford $2K for an ABC body replacement. Build 'em like tanks, and they will be back next week. If you biuld 'em too fragile, far too many will be left in the garages.
The $13.00 admission was very much a surprise. I was expecting to pay $20, was hoping for $15, and was pleasntly surprised when they asked for $13. Me and Roger commented (to the ticket sellers) on what a deal that was... they told us it was the first comment of the day that wasn't a complaint. I guess the regular Citrus fans are spoiled by low prices all the time. Another hint to Promoters.... jacking up your prices too high will have lots of people staying home NOT buying your Hot Dogs and coffee.
I don't know where they found the announcer for the FAST Series, but please lose him quickly. Might be a great guy, but I wasn't a fan of his style, and general lack of knowledge about these drivers. Never once did I hear mention of the different rule packages, what was done to equalize them out, or even who-had-which powerplants in them. I thought this was a big selling point in this series, but I never heard it mentioned a single time.
Wayne Anderson did the smartest thing a series Promoter could have done. The top 4 were offered a chance to start up front, or take the challenge fo starting in the back for an extra $500 bonus if they win. Wayne took the challenge, and wound up winning from 27th (without a scratch on the car from what I could tell). Steve Dorer also manned-up and took the challenge too, saying "I didn't want Wayne to feel all alone back there".
I have really high hopes for the rest of this season. So far this year, I've seen several classes at 4 different tracks, and the competition at each has been very good. Seeing Josh Richards come from 17th to win, Anderson doing it from 27th, Dale McDowell from 29th to 6th, I think there were 8 different leaders in the PASS South race.... I've already seen more passing this year than some entire years combined.
2010 could be an outstanding year for racing in Florida...!
