Did anyone notice the #67 above? Its Gene Tharp, him and Stanley built Desoto. I can't remember Stanly's last name to save my soul. Also the #7 pinto bodied car. Thats Jim Kelly in Fred Hawkins car. We think it was taken at Desoto. Bob...

May the Schwartz be with you....
Stanley Schwartz (spelling circumspect) was his name. He also ran Late Models at Saramana and was an attorney in Bradenton.
Most people would probably remember Gene being the wheel man of the Chi's Market/National Guard sponsored, red, white and a little blue, #31 Chevelle for my favorite tomato farmer and honorary uncle, Willie Teddar.
Willie and Sara Lee are still weekly fixtures at CCMP. But I'll bet a lot of folks down there don't know just how much of their lives have been spent supporting racers and race tracks alike here in Florida.
A lot of my pictures from Saramana got ruined in an unfortunate, washing machine-overflow accident a couple of years ago but I will see if a picture of that car survived. I'm also going to go see a friend of mine that I lent some of my old Saramana programs to, retrieve them and scan em' in.

I remember Tharpe in a #33 National Guard Nova at Golden Gate and DeSoto when it first opened; don't recall a #31 Chevelle, though.
As for that #7 Pinto at DeSoto, in the pic, there's no wall around that corner. DeSoto's had walls all the way around since it opened in '79. Tampa had no walls around it, at least right next to the track; Inverness had no wall around turns 1 and 2; and I believe the old Lakeland quarter-miler didn't have any walls at all around it except for the frontstretch.

Dickie's car is at NSS.
You can see at the top on the picture, the bottom of the flag stand. Just behind the fence to the left of the flag stand are the stairs that they put down on the track after the races were over. That night's trophies are on display on those stairs. The year is up for grabs.

Thanks, oneoff. Here's a pic (courtesy of Fenton's thread over in the "Where are they now?" section of Tampa's frontstretch in 1975 when Howe won his third Florida 200 Governor's Cup (and second straight). The pic of Anderson that Bob posted, the track looks nothing like the pic of Howe.
Sorry if I seem like I'm bein' picky
Just trying to clear up the years and the dates for everyone.

Old Timers
Need to do some digging for old photo's...have Jim call me, as it is 75 miles from your side of town (round trip). They were my Mom's and there are boxes every where here..as I am in the middle of eliminating stuff in my life..talk about a mess! Remember some of people I didn't know..so maybe others will recognize them..have to be a old timer for sure. Went to DeSoto last night and the 100 lapper went well...lots of green laps..was difficult for me..strange feelings. Still a little chilly...

I'll talk to Jim tomorrow Nancy. Yes I imagine Late Model races are going to be difficult for a while. It will get easier as time goes on, but it'll never be the same. Richard will be missed. Every time I tape a Late Model race I think of Richard. Bob...
