Interesting to watch the progress of the old tower seats in the background of the checkered flag shots. I remember paying $2 to go sit in there when it was too cold. Had to look around the telephone poles to see down the straights. I also remember when you stood on the stands in front of the lower section the people in the tower would get all pissed because they couldnt see over you. - edit - Actually the better shots of that are in the other post...
The #8 Late Model is Jim Cushman in a "Petty Kit Car"
The #26 Mod is George "The Duke of" Kent
The #58 Mod is "Marvelous" Merv Treichler
The #96 in the background is Jack Cook
The M-6 was driven in earlier forms by Gene Bergin, among others. No idea who's in it here though. Pretty sure it was owned by Jack Beebe, who went on to start the Race Hill Farms team (#47) in NASCAR. Drivers for that team included Geoff Bodine, Ron Bouchard, Harry Gant and Morgan Sheppard.
The red #62 Camaro Late Model could be Lee Schuler out of Illinois. The #11 is, of course, multi-time track champ david Rogers, who's still going strong 30+ years later. The silver-maroon #48 looks like Ricky Knotts out of Indiana, I believe. The #72 Mustang II Modified looks to be maybe PeeWee Griffin's car. Richie Evans and Neil Bonnett both drove PeeWee's tan/brown Modified Camaros at the "big track" when they hosted the 200-miler for the Modifieds on the road course. That black #7 Modified is a Mustang II as well; I thought at first it was Tommy Baldwin's ride out of Rhode Island, but then I remembered there was a "George" something-or-other that drove *that* #7 car; Baldwin's cars were always numbered as "7NY".
Another interesting note; look at all the cars on *Firestones*, including Cushman, Rogers, Knotts, and Schuler.
I do know that Knotts drove that same #48 at the Governor's Cup at Golden Gate that same year. Never seen Knotts (in Speed Sport News or Stock Car Racing magazine) in a #21.
Ricky Knotts has the dubious distinction of having the shortest Winston Cup career. Sadly,he died at Daytona on lap 15 during the 2nd twin 125 in 1980.
Yes, Rick Knotts drove the orange 21 for most of his career. He did however jump in the #48 owned by Dick Collier and formerly driven by Bob Sensiba. This would have been late 1977 as they raced at Salem Speedway IN. in the Midwest 300 then into 1978. They (Collier/Knotts) then painted the car #3 a red camaro which would be Rick's last short track car before he tragically lost his life trying his hand at NASCAR at Daytona. He was a good short tracker thats for sure!
The 151 of Pete Whilloughby I believe is a picture at Speedworld ( the rails along the grandstands on the first row plus chicken wire fence instead of chainlink).
