  • Modified Reunion 2010 at New Smyrna Speedway

Things are shaping up for the 3rd Annual Modified Reunion. Here are the details, and hope to see you ALL there:

As the racing season in Florida winds down, it's time to start looking forward to the 2010 racing season and its traditional opener at New Smyrna Speedway. On Friday, February 12th, 2010, the 3rd Annual Modified Reunion will be taking place. This is the same day that honors one of the greatest racers ever, with the annual "Richie Evans Memorial 100, for the Tour-type Modifieds.

For the last 2 years, the Modified Reunion has become part of the festivities at the track, and has become quite popular. Well over 100 of the biggest names from Northeast Modified history have joined us at this event. Drivers, car owners, track owners, flagmen and mechanics from virtually all of the Northeast tracks have been involved. Of course, this event is for the Fans also, and all are welcomed to attend.

Hall of Fame drivers like Dutch Hoag, Bill Wimble, Bentley Warren, Bugs Stevens, Will Cagle, Gil Hearne, Ron Bouchard, Ed Ortiz, Andy Romano, Ron Narducci, Satch Worley and Chuck Boos have all been here. Famous car owners, such as Bob Garbarino, Bob Judkins, Speedy Thomas, Don Turner (of the famous Turner Brothers) and Joe Brady have all supported this event. Track owners Dick Waterman and Stan Friesen, plus Flagmen Ken Golden and Chris Hopkins also turn out to tell old stories and renew friendships.

Also, the Vintage Racecar show has turned out to be very popular with both the fans and participants. Car count has been near the 20 mark each year, and we are expecting a larger turnout than ever in 2010.

Once again, this event is 100% free for all who would like to join us in reliving old memories and the telling of plenty of tall tales. All participating Drivers, as well as the other honored guests, will also receive a pair of Grandstand tickets to enjoy the evening races, and all Vintage Car participants will receive a pair of Pit Passes for the same night. Both of these admissions are courtesy of the New Smyrna Speedway management.

Contacting these former greats is a very difficult job, and we could use all the contact information that we can get. If there is any way you can be there, or if you know someone that would be interested, please contact me. I hope to see you all on February 12th, 2010…!

A good day for pre-entries. I've either talked to, or have been told these guys are coming:

Bob Judkins... Owner of the famous 2x cars. Has been at this since the early 60's or so.

Vic Kankas... worked with both Ron & Ken Bouchard, among others. Also won a Busch Championship with Joe Nemechek.

Gene Bergin... won tons of races throughout New England. Another Hall of Famer. The car #2x that started the "Pinto Revolution", that Gene drove, and Judkins owned, will also be here, courtesy of Tobi Smith of Titusville.

George Summers... another New Englander that won a bazillion features. Once almost won the famous Oxford 250 (for full-bodied cars) but got passed on the last corner of the last lap.

Speedy Thomas... car owner of the #07 that was driven to plenty of wins by Southerners, Paul Radford, and Satch Worley... and plenty of others. Paul Radford will not make it here... he won't give up hunting season!

Jack Tant... Speedy tells him he'll pick him up & drag him here, if needed. Tant was an ace engine builder, who built race winning engines for Ray Hendrick, Geoff Bodine, and went on to become a top-notch builder of Busch series engines as well.

Bob Garbarino... owner of the "Mystic Missle" #4 cars for nearly 40 years now. Chased the Nascar Modified title for a couple of decades before finally winning one in 2008. after all that time, he followed it right up again in 2009. The list of his former drivers is impressive to say the least.

Satch Worley... one of the few Southern guys who could come up North, and kick our guys asses. Ray Hendrick, and Paul Radford were the others that could hold their own... anytime, anywhere.

Ken Bouchard (no confirmation)... Former Nascar Rookie of the Year, and winner of bunches of races in Mods, and a few in Busch.

Jim McGraw... a long-time racer at Lancaster & Spencer Speedways. Good racer, and a hell of a lot of fun to talk to!

Ed Ortiz... Just as good on asphalt or Dirt, Ed won all over the state of NY for well over 30 years. A man to beat every time he pulled in the gates.

Bill Rafter (no confirmation)... Bill was THE top dog in Western NY from the 50's at the old Civic Stadium in Buffalo (the original home of the Bills), all the way through the 70's. Another guy in every Hall of Fame.

This has been a good day, and I hope the little stories that go along with these people will make some people think about what the HISTORY of our sport means!

          Heard from a few more:

Joe Winchell... has driven pretty much every type of car in Florida, and won in all of them. Trying to put something together for Speedweeks, but will be at the Reunion regardless.

Ron Abney Sr... not bringing his Mod to NSS, but will be at the Reunion. Coming with his buddy Spookie

Spookie Whittle will be bringing an Antique Sprint Car.. could be very interesting!

Vintage Cars now up tp 15

            More folks coming....

Will Cagle, the "Tampa Terror" says he will be back this year

Bobby Brack, Florida LM legend, but also a former Mod racer in NJ, says he's in... and looking forward to seeing Cagle, Gil Hearne, and Bob Malzahn again.

Don Turner, of the famous "Turner Brothers" Orange #18 team that Dutch Hoag, Lee Osborne, Gary Reichert, and many others took to a whole lot of wins.

Maynard Troyer (my IDOL)... won't commit, but at least he will be considering joining us. If it wasn't for this one guy, I don't know if I ever would have turned out to be a racefan. Y'all got Jesus... I got Maynard!

Had a good talk with Bill Spade... Long Island ace. He'll be bringing a few racers with him.

Chuck Akulis.... I don't have enough fingers and toes for all the Championships this guy has won. A Dirt specialist, Chuck (with quite the limited budget), and raced with, not to mention whipped, EVERY big-name Dirt Mod driver from the 60's through the 2000's. Usually comes to Florida at that time of year... might have him leaning South right now!

Also, Ronnie Rohn has entered his '55 Chevy LM into the Vintage segment

Left voice mails for Kenny Brightbill, Billy Pauch and Don Diffendorf... sure hope to hear back from them!

Ray Miller, of East Granby CT. is coming. He won quite a few races at Stafford & such, racing against a lot of top names like Bouchard, Stevens, Flemke, Jarzombek, and dozens more.

He didn't travel as much as some guys, but he sure was tough close to home!

I was just reading an old racing paper with a headline reading "Brack Uses 30 Years Experience to Win at Hialeh".... the paper was dated 1991...!

Bobby made it all the way from Miami to Charlotte, shown here in a Rahmoc Enterprises ride. Along the way, he spent a few years racing Modifieds in NJ/PA.

Bob Judkins, who still runs a Florida Modified locally, has been a car owner ofr a LOT of years, and has employed some of the best-ever Modified racers. Behind the wheel at this time, is Eddie Flemke, one of the original "Eastern Bandits".

A restoration of this car was at the first Reunion, and it's still BADASS. The car owner Phil, told me in '09 that he would have it there again in 2010.

Here's Todd Gibson, in one of the Flinstone Flyer Supermodifieds. Todd made it far as Indy on his talent, but his budget couldn't keep him there.

His son, Gene Lee Gibson made quite a name for himself as well.
