    Harry Pullen

My first trip to the Eau Gallie Speedway, I was 6 weeks old. 1951. One night it was Eau Gallie Speedway, the next night, Orlando Speedway. I loved racing. How could I not, my father was 'Hoppin Harry' Pullen. Uncle Henry Pullen and Uncle Charles Pullen were racers as well. MY mom, Margarete Pullen raced a few "Powder Puff" races. I raced motorcycles, my brother Harry Jr. raced at Eau Gallie Speedway and then Legend cars at Texas Motor Speedway. Harry Jr.'s son Harry Pullen III raced Legend cars at Texas Motor speedway. Dad loved racing. He died 3 years ago at age 82, in Denton, Texas, and Uncle Charles died a few months later. Uncle Henry is still alive in Florida. I do have old photos if anyone interested. Love the stories of dad on here...thanks, Wanda

Sorry to hear about your Dad and Uncle Charles. As I said in an earlier post, Charlie was a great guy, although during his career I was still in NY, and possibly not even born yet.

BUT, I have become a lot more educated about the earlier years of racing in Florida, and know that the Pullens were fast, respected, and winners.

You should be proud to come from such a historical family...!

Not only was Harry fun to watch, for a period of time he came up with a fuel concoction that smelled exactly like shoe polish when he went by. Most of his cars were not really flashy and many had the numbers painted flat black, He did build one that he actually spent some time on the appearance. The first night out a driver was getting out of his wrecked car on the strightaway. Harry had no choice he stuffed in the fence to avoid hitting the guy. There was a tale that Harry built most of his motors in the living room of his house, I always wondered if it was true but certainly would not have been surprised. The entire Pullen clan were integral parts in racing in the 50s 60s and into the early 70s. Definitely some good memories there.

Wanda, thanks so much for your post. Please contact me off list at racehistry@aol.com as I'd love to ask you more questions about your Dad and Charlie.

          Thanks very much.

Both Eddie Roche & I did not know both Harry and Charlie had passed... They were two really great guys who gave us a lot of entertainment in our younger days... I've got plenty of photos of the Pullen brothers on my website www.floridaracinghistory.com but am always looking for more...
