Charlie Pullen was a former landlord of mine. At the time, I'd never heard of him or his brother, Harry Pullen, but he told me about a few tracks that I'd never heard of at the time, like Sunbrock, Orlando Raceway and "Casselberry", which turned out to be the Seminole Dog Track less than a 1/4 from my Grandmothers house. Never knew they ran Stock Cars there, and even had a couple of Grand National events there.

I wonder if Charlie is still around. I'd love to pick his brain, now that I know a little something of the local history.

Also, Ernie Bass was in the first race I ever went to in Florida. My Dad was business associates with Ron Arnold, of Ron's Forklift Service, who sponsored Ernie at the time. It was Auburnadale Speedway, either late 1980, or very early 1981... froze my ASS off. I believed too many people in NY that "Florida NEVER gets cold!!!

Phil Orr was still running Mini-Stocks at Volusia up until about 10-12 years ago. I've heard he has since passed away.

I recall both Howard and Hohman running more at Orlando than EG but the list I put up was from a program and I'm not sure how often the roster was updated. Many others could have been included like Stan Parker in his Sputnik #91. Gene Winn from Miami came up with a little Willys coupe #1-P and spanked the boys now and then. I loved those early days at EG, up until about '62 when things began to change a bit.

Lots of old greats listed there.

One name jumps right out at me immediately. The only man (that I can recall) that put me on my back one night in the pits at Golden Gate after a little altercation on the race track. I remember it (or some of it) like it was yesterday.

Here he came into my pit area to get my address for his Christmas card list, bib-overalls and all. Not liking my initial response He gave me a good hard shove to which I said; "you must not know who you're f'g with" and came off the ground with the hardest punch I've ever thrown in my life right into the face.

This is where it gets a little fuzzy. I think I moved him back maybe 6", and I clearly recall him shaking his head a little and saying something like; "that was a pretty guden Fenton" but that was about it. I don't remember seeing it coming (the truck that hit me) or anything else for that matter after that.

My first memory after that was of Marshall Faircloth un-tangling my arms and legs from around the tandem axles of our trailer (I had been standing 2-3 feet in front of that trailer when he hit me) and telling me to common and wake up.

I'd never met ol' Harry Pullen up close & personal until that night but that first meeting was sure a memorable one.

I do have a pic of Ernie Bass in an old Sunshine Speedway program around here somewhere. I'll dig it up and get it on here when I have a minute.

I learned alot about Eau Gallie Speedway in those two reunions that Lou White did. It was great hearing the history of that speedway and meeting alot of the guys who ran there. Back then it was alot easier to race and you didn't have to own a bank to do so. Love the old stories and thanks Marty for the program. Hope to see you somewhere in 2010.

Here’s Ernie Bass in the Amick Construction car on the cover (upper right #5) of the July 1970, Sunshine Speedway program after winning the 50 lap race on Memorial Day as well as continuing to maintain his High Point lead in the Late Model class.

My Brother-in-Law Kenny Faircloth is on the right after he and Jim Gray presented Ernie with the Marshall Faircloth Memorial trophy. My nephew Harlan Faircloth is on Ernie’s lap.

                    Arthur Burt

The gentleman listed 2nd is alive and well and living in Central Florida. Known as "Buster Burt". He is in the Maine Motorsports hall of fame. He is a great friend and I want to help him. He is looking for anything concerning a race he thinks was in 56 or 57, called the "little 500". he finished 2nd to Emil Reutimann running an old flat head while Emil was much faster, Buster just putt, putted around and just about won the race.

I have gotten some info from Marty Little, but would like to hear from anyone else that would have any info.
                    Thanks,
                    Glen Carter

Happy Stiegle was not only the flagman he also was involved in construction of the track and owned the cars that Stan Kross and later Jim McGuirk drove which were fielded out of his Palm Cove Garage on old US 1 north of Eau Gallie. Kross later became the flagman when he stopped driving.

See if you can get buster to come to the 2nd annual Blast from the past. I'd like to get an interview with him. Now that'd be cool. Bob...

                            Just wondering

I know this is a very old thread and probably wont get any answers,,but I was just wondering when I was a kid my dad drove and worked on race cars, he was not a big name or famous and most only knew him from just around the tracks if they knew him at all. But he had a really good friend who helped him work on his race car alot. I was told that this friend his name was Bobby Rudd drove a race car some and at the Eau Gallie Speedway and was in a very bad wreck flipped over a well or railroad ties or something and was hurt really bad and he never raced again,he was messed up pretty bad, this had to be in the early 60s maybe Im not sure of the date.. He was from West Palm Beach tho. Thanks

Phil Orr passed away a few weeks ago. Either late April or early May 2011.
