  • I am Tired of Gloom and Doom, Let's have some fun

What is your all time favorite Halloween memory?? Was it when you were a child or was it when you had children/grandchildren?? What is your favorite memory when it comes to Halloween which is this Saturday???

Since I have really never been with any of my grandchildren for Halloween because of distance, my favorite memory that always comes into my mind on Halloween is of my granny, my dad's mom. I was blessed to live right down the hill from her for the first 10 years of my life. She was the small town's HALLOWEEN QUEEN in Mendenhall, Mississippi where I grew up.

Each Halloween, a month or so before, she would start ordering candy and little favors for Halloween. I would spend hours making up the goodie bags for her before Halloween night where she would have punch, goodie bags, and carmel apples and cookies for everyone. Everyone came to her house if no place else in my hometown.

Then Honey, my granny's collie, would go out trick or treating with me, my brother and my cousins never leaving our sides all night. We had a blast.

When we moved from Mendenhall to Raymond, Mississippi for my dad to work at Hinds Jr. College, all the Halloween fun was gone until I had my own children. The year I moved from Florida to Ohio for my ex-husband's work, was on Halloween weekend and my then 5 year old son tried to Trick or Treat the motel where we were staying. Of course it did not work but he tried. I don't think I was ever more upset than that night because he was so disappointed but we had to move and that was when.

So what are your favorite memories of Halloween??? I know you have some.

Boy Jane you are making me feel old, makin me think of those olden days before white bread. Well store bought anyway. The memory that sticks out most in my mind is a loooong time ago when I was about 6 or 7. I told you a looong time ago.5 or 6 of my buddys and I dressed up in various attire. I was howdy doody I might add. Some of these youngens don't even know who Howdy Doody was. We went to several houses and got the peoples Garbage cans and emptyed their trash on the ground and took them to the front door and filled them with water leaned them against the front door and knocked on the door and ran. The idea was for the door to open and the water to poor all over the place. The first few didn't go too good. The first one the door opened out and the lady couldn't get her door open. the next one didn't come to the door and the next one had a door bell so we layed on his door bell enough to be annoying and sure enough this guy came storming out and jerked his door open to catch 25 gallons of water on his legs. Well I guess we didn't think it out too good. Cause we were watching when he came out and when the can fell he was so surprised he went to hollering and it scared the doo out of us so we started running. The old guy looked up and saw us so he lit out after us. well as I stated earlier I was dressed up like Howdy Doody and I had a pair of my Grand Daddy's rubber boots on, hence me cudn't run very fast. To make a long story longer the ole guy caught up with me easily. He took me by the ear and led me back to his house and made me clean up the whole mess. The worse part was I could hear my buds snickering at me from afar. The more worser part was when the ole guy took me to my grand Daddy and tole him what we'd did. And the more worser than that I got the razor strap. The moral of that story is to stay home on Holow ween. Bet you thought I was goody two shoes growing up? HUH!!! Bob...

      Long Time Ago

MANY years ago up in NJ. Had a neighbor that would keep our baseball or whatever else went in his backyard. Our parents asked and he never gave anything back. SO on mischief night, you yankees know that day, we took a large bag of dog poop put it in a paper bag and set it on his front porch and set it on fire and rang the bell. He came out saw the bag a stomped it out. Now that was some very smelly revenge.

I am still making Hallween memories. Tomorrow night, I am throwing a Halloween party in my racecar garage. It is for my youngest sons and their friends. Most of the kids will be between 6-8 years old. I've spent the week toiling on it, so I'll add some pictures because the party garage came out great!

There have been lots of Haunted Houses and Halloween parties over the years. I've loved this holiday since I was a kid, and don't want to see it turned into a "harvest festival". I am old school: vampires, mummys, Frankenstien, etc. We'll have a great, and sometimes spooky, time tomorrow night.

The best memory was probably Miami, 1991. My friends and I built a BIG haunted house. We used an entire warehouse and FILLED it. Hundreds of people went through it: some running, some cowering, all screaming and laughing. They loved it and were so complimentary.

I'll never forget the sight of some of our haunted house visitors. They were "ethnic" women who would get so upset that they would flop to the ground and claw at the sky like a dying roach. This was not an isolated incident! A bunch of them did it!

Get out and have some fun this weekend!

Moving to the US in 2004 was my first real experience of just how big Halloween is over here, as we don't do very much about it at all in the UK. That's mainly because we have Guy Fawkes Night on November 5th, which is all about eating hotdogs and burgers around a big bonfire and watching the only fireworks display we have all year. The kids are traditionally out with a home-made 'guy' that they'll then burn on the bonfire and they go out door-to-door asking for a 'Penny for the guy', where people used to give them money for fireworks. It's only recently that kids in the UK have started trick or treating, mainly because they see it so much on the TV and in films now. With that and the move now to have proms for school-leavers I fully expect the UK to be celebrating Thanksgiving by 2016 and then going all out for Independence Day by 2020.

If anyone is around downtown Orlando tomorrow daytime and wants something to do with their kids, the museum I work at is having a big Trick or Treat Safe Zone featuring a haunted maze, ghost hunters in the old Orange County court rooms, crafts for the kids and the whole museum will be open to look around. It's free admission all day too, so everyone can come in and have fun. The activities are running from 11am to 4pm and you can read more about them on our website

We used to do the thing with the poop in the bag and also a BIG rat trap that would pop on the foot at the same time...OUCH.
Our favorite was taking all the FOR SALE signs from around the neighborhood and putting them in front of our school......Hundreds of them.

Also on Halloween night I arrived in Oakland for shipment to Viet Nam.

You should feel more 'proud' than 'old'...

We didn't have much dog poop, we gathered a few fresh cow pies. Don't take near as long to fill a sack. Bob..

We had plenty of 'horse power'.
The biggest problem was finding all those signs. Today it's a target rich enviorment........
Are you missing your sign Jimbo????????
