With Ocala going back to dirt, will the Powell Memorial continue, and just transform into a dirt Late Model race, or will it keep the asphalt guys and move to Inverness, Bronson, or DeSoto?

The Powell Memorial race WILL continue to be raced at Ocala and will be a dirt late model race. With the change to dirt and it being a series race plan for bigger and better things coming along!! It is on our series schedule for 100 laps on June 6, 2008. You can check out the information here www.fdlmcs.com.

The Powell Memorial was originally a dirt late model race! The first Powell Memorial ran on DIRT! It is simply going back to its roots, just like Ocala Speedway is doing. James Powell is thrilled with the prospects for the race on dirt, and we will welcome a literal who's who of top notch dirt late model drivers for this year's addition. And some asphalt folks (and former asphalt folks) will most likely be joining us, such as Rich Pratt, Jeff and Justin Choquette, Patrick Williams, and many others. Even Ivedent Lloyd is hoping to be there! There will be much more on this race coming later, and I guarantee it will be a far bigger and better event than it ever was on pavement!Originally posted by Jimmy McKinley View PostWith Ocala going back to dirt, will the Powell Memorial continue, and just transform into a dirt Late Model race, or will it keep the asphalt guys and move to Inverness, Bronson, or DeSoto?

I think I heard that it will be a $10K to win race, which should bring in some high-quality talent from all over the Southeast as well. It has the potential of being a real good event!
Any thought to trying for a Southern All-Stars co-sanction for that race? Between the new Florida group and the SAS, it would surely fill the pits.

Nobody is more excited about the Powell Memorial more than me! This year it will start out as a $5000.00 to win race. My long term plan is to turn it into the states premier most prestigious dirt late model race. What a great tribute to the Powell family! This years race is going to be off the hook! Side by side, sideways, left front tire in the air on the edge of your seats race.
Free ticket to this years race for the first person that posts the winner of the first Powell Memorial.(it was on dirt)

Hey BJ....I have to let you know that you are wrong and/or mis informed. The First Powell Memorial was in 1997 at Ocala Speedway on ASPHALT that's right ASPHALT. It payed $10,000 to win and #4 Jeff Purvis won it and David Reutiman finished second. I know, I was there in the tower with my dad. Please guys lets get the facts straight before we post.
I'm glad to see that Ocala Speedway will continue the Powell Memorial...even on farming soil.
I also want to thank Bronson Speedway for having a full season next year in 2008. We wish you all the best of luck.
Sincerly, Brent Cooper. #97.

It was Jeff Purvis. I was there, and it was awesome. They ran the race a few times at Citrus County, but it always feels better at Ocala.Read the newest Running Wide Open racing blog at http://www.joevanhoose.com/.

Sorry Brent, but you are the one with incorrect "facts" You are describing the first one on pavement. Alot of people make that mistake, so don't feel too bad. Yes, almost all of them were run on pavement and people tend to think of the Powell Memorial as a asphalt race because of that, but if you check the official records, you'll see that 1996 was the first race.Originally posted by Big Moose View PostHey BJ....I have to let you know that you are wrong and/or mis informed. We were there when Jeff Purvis won also, but I was'nt sure if that was the first Powell memorial race there, it was dirt and I know James Powell the third came in second that night so it must have been 1996.So I was right I think.Originally posted by Joe View PostIt was Jeff Purvis. My bad guys....I meant 1996 not 1997
. But, It was ASPHALT and it was won by Jeff Purvis followed by David Reutiman....excellent race...as I was there and my dad was the announcer. 1996 to 2007 12 years of asphalt racing...hence 12th annual Powell Memorial. That's my final answer. I got to go get my dirt car(s) ready
