  • NSS tech - I heard a rumor

Can anyone verify if this is true? I heard the top 3 Super Stocks in tonights 50 lap race all had aluminum water pumps. The rule book clearly states that aluminum water pumps are not allowed, and other competitors who did not run them were pointing this out to the officials.

Does anyone know with certainty if this is true?
If it is, why weren't these 3 cars DQ'd?

for reference, page 25, clause DD of the Engine section under Super Stocks:
    http://www.newsmyrnaspeedway.org/pdfs/09rules.pdf
    "DD. No aluminum water pumps."

must say, whether or not aluminum water pumps are going to be DQ'able offenses, i approve of something being under that clause.

Certain small block Chevys came with aluminum water pumps as stock , so i guess we're talking about expensive aftermarket aluminum pumps ? If the rules say you can't , then there sure should be a penalty .

actually, Ron pointed out to me that Chevrolet engines would be the only engine that this rule could apply too. practically everything else ( Ford and Buick for certain ) comes from the factory with aluminum water pump housings and you can't get cast iron water pumps.

why this rule is even in here i have no idea.

maybe we should make clause DD the Super Stock brake light rule?

And this surprises anyone? It is New Smyrna and FASCAR after all. If any of the top 3 had been a orange car with a aluminum water pump they would of for sure thrown them out. Oh well just another example of inconstancy in enforcing the rules.

Not so fast Mr. frontdoor; we don't know if it is true. That is why I am asking if anyone knows first hand about what happened. I only heard about it and didn't see for myself.

The point is not if the water pumps created a performance advantage, the point is the rule enforcement. Enforce the rules as written.

I understand where you all are coming from but if every rule was enforced then there probably would not be a single car on the track. Several Chevy's came with aluminum water pumps. I think reliability is more important.

Take a step back and look what really happened. Not taking anything away from the drivers but they clearly out spent everyone else there. One car couldn't turn left if it had too but was a monster down the straightaways and the other car could drive itself.

Hey M.F., we all know it would take more than a water pump for YOU to win!

So many exceptions should be made? I also heard about aluminum fenders on a car. If this is true, should they also be overlooked? Anyone who thinks can see that aluminum body parts are a performance advantage.

My whole point is that the book is written one way, but appears to be enforced another way. It would be nice to get more first hand information on this.

Do you think I am the only one who noticed? Not hardly.

Other than a slight weight advantage and slightly better cooling , i can't imagine why aluminum pumps were ever outlawed . As Todd pointed out , the rule only really applies to one brand of car anyway . I remember a thread on this board some time ago that picked apart some of the dumb rules that tracks have , and encouraged everyone to re-write or eliminate those types of rules . This might be a good time to get back to that . How many more rules are there at tracks all across the state that don't make sense , and don't need to be in the book ?
As far as DQing a car for that infraction , its a definite NO . But the car owner should be required to replace the pump before he brings it back to the track . Of course theres always the NASCAR method , fine em $25 and make them replace it with a legal one .

                          Huh? You kidding?

The rule book says "no", but somewhere in the inspection process certain cars were told "yes". This seperate and unequal rule book has been a fixture at NSS for years. Wouldn't this be a good year to get rid of it?

Cars in that class have been DQ'd for smaller reasons this year.

Once again this is where the once famous now banned Frasson118's idea of bracket racing would be perfect. Throw the rule book away and have a safety inspector. There, no more whining and crying, bitching or moaning.
