Last year I heard all sorts of predictions as to a couple of asphalt tracks that supposedly were going dirt. Auburndale apparently went out and got information as to how to accomplish it, but it never happened. This year's rumor seems to be Desoto.

What Mike Peters did at Ocala was ballsy, risky, and probably stupid in a lot of people's eyes. It has turned out to be probably the best decision ever made by a promoter in Florida, and had he not done it I expect that Ocala would no longer be a race track. So once Mike took the plunge a saw such overwhelming success, why wouldn't another promoter do the same? And that is especially true if that person's asphalt facility is struggling, and many are.

What is stopping them is money. The investment to do the job correctly involves hundreds of thousands of dollars, and most track operators don't have that in reserve, and if they do they are unwilling to risk it. But if Ocala continues to see wild success despite the current state of the economy, look for at least one or more asphalt tracks to try it within a year. Right now you can't even close the place and put up a warehouse and expect to make money, so Mike's move may look better and better.

Then again, why make a dirt track when you can probably buy one for a song? Maybe someone will step up and purchase Putnam instead of dirting an asphalt track? And Putnam is a relatively nice place that simply needs a little TLC and someone who knows how to run it, plus it comes with a dedicated group of racers and fans who will apparently put up with just about anything. Its just a thought.

Excitement & entertainment bring people to Saturday Night Racing, not speed.

        true dat.

everybody is probably tired of hearing me say it, but the best racing i've ever seen anywhere was a regular show at Slinger WI. 1/4mi and paved.
