Paul Grynewicz, Herne’s Ready For Figure 8 Racing Invasion

    World Figure 8® Racing Tour
    Indianapolis, Indiana
    February 6, 2009

An ultimate veteran (Paul Grynewicz) and a pair of up-and-coming drivers (Neil and Charles Herne) are next to throw their helmet in the ring for the Florida Figure 8 Championship. They bring experience and youthful enthusiasm to the series to be held at the Auburndale Speedway from February 12th to the 15th, 2009. That week will see the sunshine state overflowing with the best short track drivers on the planet. Six classes of racing machines will compete during the four-event campaign. The Florida Figure 8 Championship is proud to have these names added to the festivities.

Hudson, Florida Figure 8 living legend Paul Grynewicz is set to bring his nearly 50 years of experience in racing competition to the upcoming Figure 8 series. His championship resume includes the 1983 Sunshine Speedway Pro Figure 8 title, 1992 DeSoto Speedway crown, 1992 Southern Florida Figure 8 deed, as well as the Auburndale championship. That super successful campaign also included being name driver of the year at the Hialeah Speedway. The sunshine state star has more crossover triumphs than one can count including three recent main events wins at Citrus County Speedway in 2007.

Paul’s victories have not been limited to the Figure 8 machines (even though they are his favorite). He has wins in the Street Stock and Modified divisions. Grynewicz even captured the 1997 points title in the Southwest Region of the American Race Truck Series. He even brought his grace and crossover timing to the Midwest competing at the Indianapolis Speedrome and Jeffersonville Sportsdrome in May of 1993. Paul will have a huge presence during the tour with a fan base that ranks near the best in all of short track racing.

The Herne racing family got the fever for the track a few years ago and found a home in the Figure 8 world. Brothers Charles and Neil Herne III have become one of the special breed of racers who challenge the dreaded crossover twice a lap. With their dad turning wrenches out of their successful family business, the duo made the journey to the World Figure 8® Championship in Indianapolis for 2007. It was a valuable learning experience and saw the team return home to build some more high-powered machines. That was the way to go as Neil garnered the group’s first Figure 8 feature victory at the Citrus County Speedway on June 21, 2008. The team will field a third car in this upcoming series for pilot Eric Sharrone.

The Florida Figure 8 Championship is sanctioned by the World Figure 8® Racing Tour. It has dates set for February 12th to the 15th, 2009 at the Auburndale Speedway. These events evolved from the legendary World Figure 8® Championship held each year at the EDCO Welding Indianapolis Speedrome®. The $20,000 to win, 33rd Annual World Figure 8® Championship is September 10th to 12th, 2009.

The invasion of crossover competitors is convening at the Auburndale Speedway in Winter Haven from Thursday the 12th to Sunday the 15th for the civil war battle against the hometown drivers in this Florida Figure 8 Championship. That headlining division will be joined on the roster by local stars in five amazing oval classes.

The series staff is anxiously anticipating this four-event festival of speed. They will be working in unison with all the drivers, mechanics, and team owners to put on the best possible show for the fans. “It is always about pleasing the fans and giving them a reason to be on their feet the whole night long”, said five-time Florida track champion Rodney Davis. The spectators are going to be witness to some of the best Figure 8 racing in the nation.

The home state talent is looking to defend the asphalt against a fleet of incoming Indiana pilots on a racing vacation. Billy Skiles leads his mega squad with drivers Eddie VanMeter, Casey “the Big Cat” White, and rookie RJ Norton III in a quest for success. Also joining the action is RJ Norton Jr who looks to compete against his son for only the fourth time on the same track. Kentucky’s Tony Anderson will put his victory resume up against the stars from Florida. Fans do not miss this incredible series.

Florida Champions Fill Upcoming Figure 8 Championship Roster

        World Figure 8® Racing Tour
        Indianapolis, Indiana
        February 10, 2009

2008 saw a resurgence in Figure 8 racing in the great state of Florida. The rosters at Citrus County Speedway, Auburndale Speedway, and many other tracks were much stronger during the season. This year will see an innovative kick-off set of events for the crossover competitors at the Auburndale Speedway February 12th to the 15th, 2009. The Florida Figure 8 Championship will see an abundance of former instate champions revved-up for the invasion of northern competition.

A plethora of former Figure 8 kings from the nearby Citrus County Speedway will display all their talents. 1998 and 2004 division topper Ronnie Schreifels will be on hand teaming up with veteran Robbie Powell. By the way, Ronnie also boasts a Figure 8 title at the Bronson Motor Speedway. Reigning and two-time track conqueror Joey Catterelli is looking to charge to the front while 2007 champion Cliff “Bones” Rousseau will show his trademark patience on the ¼-mile surface. 1993, 1999, and 2000 champion Robert Aaron is also set to blast the crossover all weekend long.

A pair of all-time fan favorites are ready to put on a great show in this Figure 8 battle. These two also happen to be multi-time track champions in the sunshine state. Figure 8 living legend Paul Grynewicz brings his nearly 50 years of experience to the tour. His championship resume includes the 1983 Sunshine Speedway Pro Figure 8 title, 1992 DeSoto Speedway crown, 1992 Southern Florida Figure 8 deed, as well as the Auburndale championship. “Rockin” Rodney Davis has racked up five titles in his journeys around the state. The veteran has raced at many Figure 8 tracks from the famed Islip Raceway in New York down the east coast to Orlando’s Speed World during his 20 plus years of racing.

This renewal of the North vs. South crossover battles has teams anticipating this super series scheduled before their hometown regular season wars initiate. These “civil war” style clashes first took place at the Auburndale Speedway on February 8, 1992. Over the next six years, nineteen events were held at five different Florida tracks with the last main coming in the form of a One Hour Figure 8 at the now retired Sunshine Speedway on February 15, 1997. The new campaign has a pair of 50-lap feature along with an incredible 100-lap contest scheduled for Saturday’s Valentine evening.

Nascar Driver Michael Cherry Set For Florida Figure 8 Series

          World Figure 8® Racing Tour
          Indianapolis, Indiana
          February 10, 2009

The Florida Figure 8 Championship, to be held February 12th to the 15th at the Auburndale Speedway in Winter Haven, will host an invading driver from a national level. Michael Cherry is one whose name race fans will hear prominently for years to come. The 19-year-old speedster is on the current roster for NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity. The program is tasked with identifying and cultivating aspiring minority drivers. And in just a short time on this earth, this rising star has amassed a wealth of on track achievements and valuable experience.

His three years of instant success at the East Bay Raceway Park and Henry County Speedway landed him a tryout in a NASCAR Camping World series car. In 2007 Cherry captured the Sportsman division championship with an amazing 17 wins in 19 starts. In his first year in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, he won rookie-of-the-year honors by finishing 4th in the final standings at Radford, Virginia’s Motor Mile Speedway. The Florida native has relocated to South Carolina to be near more “big time” opportunities.

Michael does have some impressive stats in his foray into crossover competition. His four Figure 8 starts last year came at the Auburndale Speedway and included a feature victory on November 1st along with a pair of runner-ups. The unique skill set required for this exciting type of racing just adds to his growing resume. The participation in this class is no surprise as his father Jimmy spent time in the past turning wrenches for Figure 8 veteran and division personality John LaValle.

Indy's Ben Tunny Enters Florida Figure 8

TUNNY NAME ADDED TO FLORIDA FIGURE 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES LINEUP

            Indianapolis, Indiana
            February 11, 2009

Another driver from the Indianapolis area will make the journey to the Florida Figure 8 Championship to be held at the Auburndale Speedway from February 12th to the 15th. The series will see drivers from north and south challenge the dreaded crossover over the four-day festival of speed. This man has one of the most famous last names in Midwest Figure 8 racing, Tunny. Third-generation Speedrome driver Ben Tunny is the son of 2003 World Figure 8® Champion Bill Tunny Jr.

The former Indianapolis Speedrome Fall Festival series king has a strong resume in the World Figure 8® Championship three hour endurance races. He has raced in the big event on six occasions with four top ten results to his credit. He contended for the 2007 victory until a late race flat tire relegated him to third place. Last year’s event was a special one as he competed against both of his brothers as well as his dad, uncle, and cousin in the same race.

Ben has been preparing for Figure 8 racing all his life and now looks to win in his first challenge outside the Hoosier state. The 2006 World Figure 8 front row starter has many Figure 8 feature triumphs on the books including the prestigious Sonny Thompson Memorial 100-lap contest. Only in his twenty’s, he has finished in the top five in Speedrome Late Model points the past four seasons. From his start in Mini Cup to feature wins in an Open Wheel Modified to his venture into Legends cars, Ben just loves to race.

Come out and see all the cars and stars!
