  • Pitside-Chapter 1-Classic 24 Hour at Daytona

Historic Sports Car Racing hosted the Classic 24 Hour at Daytona Nov 14 & 15.

Jerome Jacalone fielded a 2007 Ferrari this year co-driven by his very capable brother, Joe Jacalone.

The effort was headed up by crew chief Ken McGuire and Ferrari Master Mechanic Mike Cavallino was also on board providing technical assistance.

The activities actually began with practice on Thursday and a qualifying event on Friday.

Many classes of large and small bore cars were there, including Porsche 962s, the Greenwood Corvette, and the Huffaker Monza, and many famous drivers as well, including Dorsy Schroeder and Bobby Rahal.

The air was filled with the staccato sound of the many Porsche six cylinder engines, the awesome rumble of the various V8s, the scream of the 12 cylinder cars and finally, the whistle of the turbos thoughout the weekend.

The race was indeed for 24 Hours, although held in hour long events for each of the various classes.

The actual hours the Ferrari competed were 5-6pm and 11-12midnight on Saturday, followed by similar hours on Sunday, 5-6AM and 11-12noon.

The car ran like the proverbial swiss watch most of the weekend, requiring only routine servicing and the removal of oil from the exterior and grass and debris from the intakes (caused by the misfortunes of others) after each segment of the race. It was a very long night for the crew, with perhaps two hours of sleep total.

As mentioned, the Ferrari ran like a Lexus...until the final moments of the final stint, when it suffered an apparent engine control system malfunction.

With no time for repairs, Joe soldiered on to bring the car home at a reduced speed for the closing laps to complete the event.

Official results are not yet in, but it is believed that the car dropped from sixth to seventh or eight in it's class.

Many thanks to Jerome and Joe Jacalone for including me in this effort, as well as the crew for sharing not only their expertise, but their friendship.

It was a pleasure to have you on board, OS. You are an asset to our small team. Jerome said to pass on his thanks as well. We actually finished 5th in class out of twelve, and 20th overall out of 37 in our group, which was the fastest of the event. If we hadn't had that electronics failure in the last 10 minutes, we would have been fourth! It was an awesome experience, racing a Ferrari 430 Challenge factory built race car at the storied Daytona International Speedway. It adds to the many great experiences I have been afforded by my brother.

PS-Mike the Ferrari mechanic's name is Mike Campanelli, he has a shop in Ocala. I have known him since the 80's, a great guy.

    PS#2- Wasn't the food great???

      dammittman, I knew that.

Exhaustion has affected my already limited reasoning abilities...

      Mike's shop:

At least, I think that is Mike's shop.

The food was great, good thing I had my "free food" wristband!

It was a great weekend again, i hope it continues for years to come. My son raced on Thursday and Friday, then his car owner jumped into their other car and ran the 24.
Thank you to all of the racers who used Renegade Racing Fuels. It was a very successful weekend.

I enjoyed the races at Daytona much more than the shenanigans that went on at NSS saturday and sunday.

I don't care much for 3rd gen corvettes but those greenwood cars are really cool.

the air was filled with the staccato sound of the many Porsche six cylinders When i decided to go to sleep i found the quietest spot in the infield to park my truck. Shortly after i got to sleep the Greenwood vette started making test passes up and down the road i was parked on. The truck would vibrate every time it passed.
lets all take a long ride on a short bus.

I quit fishing because no one was standing at the docks handing out money when i got back, why did you quit racing?

There was plenty of gear box rebuilds going on between races.
