  • Unusual Racecars

In searching for the Photo By Numbers content, I came across a few very interesting, if not outright wierd, racecars. Here are a few:

Starting with one of the strangest ever, this car was built by Ken Reese to run at Oswego. The test driver was none other than Tim Richmond, long before he went to Indy and Nascar. The story told by Reese is that Tim had a hard time getting comfortable in the car because there was no left front wheel to gauge anything by. They added a "dummy" wheel just to add a comfort level, and the car was smokingly fast. It was also banned before any track would allow them to run it!

You just saw roll bars outside the car... how would you like to drive with the entire cockpit outside of the car?

Strange ideas aren't limited to racecars, it can apply to the hauler also. This is Bob Pickell's stretched out, and re-welded Olds Toronado hauler.

This looks like a combination WWII Tank and Wedge-style Late Model built backwards!

Nobody told Charlie Swartz that the body wasn't supposed to resemble a wedge of cheese (or that he might need to think about how to get out quickly if needed).

Nor did they tell him that the engine is supposed to go in the FRONT of the car. This one is actually MID-engined. There were only 2 built... the other was driven by Loy Allen Jr., whose Daytona 500 Pole winning effort was his biggest claim to fame. That, and the fact he was the most hated man in the Nascar garage when Hooters decided to drop the recently deceased Alan Kulwicki's team in favor of Loy Allens. It wasn't Loy's fault, but the fans hated him (and Hooters) anyhow.

I raced against this hearse in several enduros. It was run at Hialeah in the early 1990's.

Jeez, that picture of OSF makes my monitor moire'.

It is tough to find a smaller racecar than #6. It is a Fiat 600.

                              A racing Messerschmitt!

From 1976, this is a Tyrell F1 car.

Ok, so it is not a racecar, but I couldn't resist this attempt at power steering....Haitian style!
