  • Southern Sportsman Series???

    www.facebook.com/reunionrace

I just saw this on Facebook. Looks like Scott Jackman was looking to have a reunion race at Citrus with designs on bringing back the series in '15. Was to be Oct. 11th before Citrus had their hiatus. Then they wanted to change it to Nov. 8th but that's the Lake City weekend. C'mon Scott, get the ball rolling here on KARNAC! I'd love to see this great series return! Jackman is the one man that can do it.

    Scott,

Do you think re-naming the class simply "late models" as opposed to "super late models" might gain a little more intere$t?

I don't know about "late models". Too generic with Supers and Pros out there. I like the moniker "Late Model Sportsman" that Desoto calls us. Most of the newer Sportsman are old Limited Late Models ( like mine ). So LMS fits. Plus it conjures up memories of the old NASCAR Late Model Sportsman division. What a great class that was. One thing is for sure. A touring series for our cars WOULD be successful, if run correctly. The first FUPS Sportsman Series race drew 26 cars before the series was systematically destroyed by bad decisions. Also, if you look back to the final Southern Sportsman Series race (which drew 25 cars), almost all of the guys are still running...

We would like to do it but only travel once a month and have a home track also would be nice to race at rest of month that's how we used to race legends

That was what I believe the formula was, Daniel. Like once a month.

The ideal schedule: Twice a month at the track in my back yard and once a month on the road at a different track. One weekend to go fishing. Of course this is taking into consideration that someone else foots the bill. I provide boat.

Sounds like a plan, Lurkin! Problem is I don't fish???? I do like being out on the water drinking beer though. That's the same thing isn't it?

Yeah Steve, tough luck at NSS. It will change. I made a total of 1 3/4 total feature laps there before I needed a front clip on my first trip to Samsula. I would suggest you and anyone else on board for a series post on the Facebook page from the link above. I pushed hard for the FUPS deal and they screwed the pooch on that one, so I'm kinda burned out. But, if the wheels got turning, of course I'd help out...

                    Clip

Steve, You better stock up on clips and make a standing appointment for the Jig now! The weekend off to go fishing Lurkin mentioned, you could use that weekend to do a clip. If you could like knock it off the weekend before. Hell put one on even if you don't need one just to practice doing it. LOL!!!

                      Scott, for your review:

How about "Outlaw Late Model Sportsman"?

Practically a sentence, and I know we have "outlaw minis", but am thinking that the words "Late Model" will get more people to the track--and command a higher purse, than "sportsman". And the "outlaw" thing both sounds cool and would indicate the somewhat radical oldschool late model bodies as well.

ps--remember "early models"? When the "late models" were typically '64 Chevelles & etc around 1970 with V8s, the early models were 55-6 chevys and fords with six cylinders. I don't think "early models" is the ticket, though (lol).

I dunno. True, some Sportsman run "outlaw" bodies but that's the only thing outlaw about them. Outlaw Sportsman is an oxymoron. Outlaw suggests limited rules while Sportsman always means extensive cost prohibitive rules. I think simply using the "Southern Sportsman Series" branding will be enough of a draw as long as the formula of large handicapping inverts, big fields and exciting door to door competition that the old series provided is maintained. Bring back the Southern Sportsman Series in name AND spirit and you'll have racing that will draw crowds. A rose by any other name...

Guess I am guessing at a catchy marketing term as opposed to a descriptive one. It's all good, and for your review--and that includes possible rejection (lol).

I like the inverted field idea. I was a tick late to Auburndale. Do you know if that field was partially inverted at the start?

Patrick told me that the top cars redrew for starting position. It wasn't a normal invert. They each individually drew a number from a can. Sorry to contradict you on the name thing, just telling it how I see it. Wouldn't want to alienate my only "fan", lol!

                              Zero problemo.

Yes, I was yelling "Go Scott" Saturday night and you weren't even there!
