    Latest update copied from FB..

    Sylvia Diehl
I hope you don't mind me using Facebook for general Bob updates. It is easier to share once. Bobby Diehl is still critical but stable. He has a little fever which is not unusual after both surgeries. Our next worry and hopefully last worry is his left kidney but we are watching it. It was not totally cut off from blood flow so we are hoping it kicks back in. Once again, I am completely overwhelmed by such amazing friends, colleagues, and family. I know that such a group of incredible people will help Bobby find his way back to us.

      Latest on Bobby...

      Sylvia Diehl
Bob update: Got new digs in ICU in the Bayshore Pavilion (5th room so far) but it has a big window with a view of the water which really helped orient him to day and night. He was sick with a lung infection most of the day but improved as the day went on. Kidneys are still the primary worry but other organs still on the list. One day at a time!

        Much better news!!!!

        Sylvia Diehl
Update: Bobby had a good day! He helped me make goals for his rehab and worked hard. His lung issues are better and his kidney numbers are a little better. Going to a transitional room from ICU tomorrow then when ready will go to acute care rehab. All in all a day in the win column.

                Kidney update info...

Bob is going to have dialysis today and then have the test which tells us what is going on with the kidneys either today or tomorrow. Need the collective! Let's hope for good news.

                  Bobby Diehl Update

Carol Wicks told me of all your concerns and wishes about Bobby Diehl. As always, I am humbled by the racing family's heart. Thank you for all of your thoughts for Bob. Bob did not have a heart attack. The surgeon said he had 150,000 miles left on his heart. He had an aortic dissection. This is when the aorta (which is a large artery leading out of the heart) tears. This tear creates 2 streams of blood carry oxygen. The one stream is the good and the second one pools and doesn't carry oxygen to the organs normally fed by that blood; therefore organs start to die off because of lack of oxygen. This is fatal about 80% of the time and we feel very lucky that he pulled through the initial operation. Two days later, he had emergency bowl resection surgery. He is off the ventilator but still has a trach. The only other organ involved was his kidney. He is going on temporary dialysis today so that they can see what is going on with his kidneys. We are hopeful that this will not be a permanent move. I will let you know the results of this. We probably will not know until tomorrow or the next day. It has been a long journey and we have a long way to go. He will have a lot of rehab once he is medically stable but we all know that Bob is a hard worker and will give it all he's got! Thank you again for your thoughts and well wishes, Sylvia Diehl

                    Not a good day. ;-(

                    Sylvia Diehl
Bob update; Unfortunately , he had a very uncomfortable day today (fever, chills, rash, back pain among others). He did not have dialysis today because they didn't try until 5:00 and his port connection was put in 2 weeks ago and couldn't be flushed out. New one to be put in tomorrow and start again. In the middle of all this, they wanted to change his room. I am feeling like I have no control. It was a tough and scary day. Looking for brighter tomorrow.
Please keep Sylvia and Bobby in your prayers. This is a tough one. Thank you
                    Carol

                        Some great news! ;-)

                        Sylvia Diehl
Bob update: Sorry no update yesterday. We moved rooms out of ICU at 12:00 and it was 2:00 before I got home. I was exhausted and very depressed. Then I met with doctors and settled us in this morning. I saved the most wonderful news for last. Bob got his result from his kidney scan this morning. His kidneys are the right size and are getting blood. There is no structural damage. He is in what they call acute renal failure because of the lack of blood to the kidneys when he had the aortic dissection. This is great news because this means in time his kidneys will kick back in!!! This was the last critical organ we were worried about. We still have a long way to go but the North Star is back in the sky!

Thank you Sylvia. Hopefully this is the start of aqn upwards climb! Bobby is tough. We all know you cannot keep the "dreamer" down for long!

                                todays news...12/7/13

Bob update: Bob was feeling better and a little stronger today. He ate food! YEAH! He was also really cranky because he wanted to go home so badly! He wakes up thinking he's home and it always takes a second for him to realize where he is and his situation and that he's not going home at least for quite a while! I feel more normal because I have to admit when his anger kept getting directed at me, I replied in a not very understanding but quite wifely way. We took another step toward normal!
