  • Too many yellows? Try this.

I watched a 50 lap race last night that had 16 (I think) yellow flags. It put a real damper on what would have been a really good race otherwise. The field of trucks was big enough, the fast ones were mixed in with the slower ones, it had all the elements of a great race, except it seemed to be stopped every 3 or 4 laps.

Some of the yellows were for real incidents, some were intentionally drawn by someone who spun, and I believe others were entirely unnecessary.

The race was often stopped for someone who spun to a stop on the Bandelero track far from the racing surface, or even in the grass. So here is my point: why not use a "push vehicle" to move these racers without stopping the race?

To me there is no reason why a car or truck with substantial bumpers couldn't go on the Bandelero track or in the infield to move stopped racers to a safer spot. Please note that I didn't say "drive on the tracK", although I've been in races where there was a clean up vehicle on the track during green flag racing. That is how the old enduros ran when there were 100+ cars. The clean up car actually helped a great deal.

So that is my suggestion: use a pusher to get at the spun out or stopped cars that it can reach without going on the track, push them to safety, and keep the race under green!

    Why wouldn't this work?

IT would work if someone would have the balls to do it.Problem is , is that the tracks, yes plural, don't want to make anyone mad.I remember years ago at putnam, early 80's, if you stopped and you didn't have 4 wheels on the track, they stayed green. These days, times are different. They want the cars and they don't want to piss any of them off. That's where the white glove mentality comes from. Personally, I say if they are out of danger, stay green and if you pull up to the track to cause a caution, YOUR ON YOUR OWN!!!!

One thing that I noticed that would cut down on cautions is that ALMOST nobody in the truck race would even try to pass on the outside. It seemed that they would root each other or just flat drive into the side of each other in the corners. I couldnt tell you how many times in that race that 2 trucks had to go to the rear.

because most of those stoppages are intentional and if you make it clear that a push vehicle will push them off of the bandelero track into the infield they'll just make sure to stop up on the banking.

a guaranteed one lap penalty for any truck which does not require pit service ( flat tire, badly damaged sheet metal, etc ) but which forces a yellow would probably get their attention.

that's lack of driver quality throughout the field. they're not used to passing on the outside but they're also not used to getting passed on the outside. if we could convince a couple of fast trucks to start at the back and go outside there'd be a lot of torn up trucks for the first month or two till the field learned not to pinch the guy on the high side towards / into the wall.

of course, with less than half the field taking the checker i guess there's not much point in trying to play patty cake with them. they're tearing the trucks up anyways.

any car in any class that is involved in a wreck or spin in the heat race starts the feature at the back. whether or not you're at fault.

you can still make your judgment calls for "fault" in the feature. i'm so tired of watching <8 car fields wad each other up in the heat.

The push truck is'nt a bad idea. How about this one, I always thought tracks should have "referees" stationed around the track. You could put them in boxes like the hockey goal judges near the catch fences. Every driver got 1 foul, a foul being you caused a yellow flag no matter what the circumstances, the second foul and you're OUT! If you were driving with 1 foul, you will think twice about roughing someone up or encouraging a caution because you want to bunch the field back up. It would also add some much needed drama to the race itself.
Does anyone, at any short track actually know who makes on track decisions? At most tracks you can beat and bang at will until someone decides it's enough. It's almost like basketball having no foul limit.
Referees would also give the fans someone to hate if they ruled against their favorite driver.

What I liked was when the 38 drove his butt off on the outside to catch back up to the 10 for a little revenge. Unfortunately he took himself out but I bet that had to be a track record for the fastest 3/4 of a lap ever.
