Almost any newer turbo import motor will make plenty of power with nothing more than a chip and a header.

Don,even you know better, cost of 600 to 630 hp is stupid $ down drain, try to get your self out of 1970s80s,same speed show, with more cars and cost less,HP to lbs,,put a new lite alum cheep motor in to a lite car on big tires and you got fast, faster then your mega $ SLM that cost more to race then tracks can pay 4. Geez you really need to look around and understand what I was getting at.

I know this is more same old crap but

I just don't understand why the Pro Trucks haven't been turned into more of a featured division down here. You know like three times a month at the same track.Give them a decent payday for at least the top three spots.Ya' know like 1500 to win each night. They ARE fast and loud enough to satisfy most of us old dogs that want to see something that relates (kind of) back to the late models of old.NASCAR has made a huge comitment to them, but it seems like the local tracks haven't .I think there is enough of a fan base in place if they were just given a little help to become an accepted thing.I know,I know, just more same old crap but just sayin'.Some of us still just want to see a GOOD competitive race with a FULL field. Not 7 or 8 cars. The tuner classes have been gaining popularity up in yankeeland where I come from, mainly with the younger fast and furious crowd, but I know that I myself would sit at home and watch re-runs of Pinks on TV before I'd lay down 15 bucks to watch tuners legends and street stocks run.I don't know, just my opinion. And maybe the local tracks don't need my 12 or 15 bucks, but I usually bring a couple people with me that would have no way there otherwise.OKAY,OKAY,bring in new stuff for the younger set,I get that. But do we have to throw everything away?!!!

It isn't really a case of throwing everything away. The problem is that short track racing has never evolved. Most nights at most short tracks in Florida, you'd be hard pressed to tell if you're watching the regular weekly show or a DAARA show.
Promoters and track owners should have included new technology and import cars gradually from the beginning. Maybe they thought the imports and 4 and 6 cyl. cars were just a fad and we'd be going back to carbs and point distributors any day. Now, bringing in front drive cars, imports, computers, turbos, etc. almost requires starting over. A little bit of fore sight would have helped a lot.

                  Maybe so Matt

But I do remember back in the early 80's the old ASA switched to all v-6's and the competitors SCREAMED.I think it was done at that time because of skyrocketing fuel prices, along with the fact that v-6's were becoming prevelant in the cars coming out of Detroit. It went over like a lead baloon.Only lasted a year or two.But then again the technology just simply with the motors, wasn't really in place yet.It ended up costing the race teams a lot more for the temporary switch. But there does come a time whenthings just have to change.Case in point NASCAR with fuel injection. The technology has had 30 years to catch up and things do have a way of coming full circle.I guess time will tell.

Some good ideas in this thread; a few not so hot. Basically, anything that increases the cost of racing eventually causes participation to decrease; fewer cars = fewer spectators = loss of operating funds = closed track.

25 - 30 cars in the pits spread over 6 or 7 classes equates to boring racing. Bored spectators quit coming to the races. We don't need 3 different classes of Late Models (Super Late, Limited Late, Late Model Sportsman) that all look alike to spectators. Find a common ground (weight per cu. in, tires, 390 or 500 CFM carb size) and run them all together. We don't need 2 classes of Modifieds; go back to the original 1985 IMCA rules, including claim rules and street tires, and make one affordable class. Dump the current Super Stock and Mini Stock rules, put them all together and call 'em Hobby Stocks (or something else). Run 'em on 60-series street tires with 7-inch-wide rims, 350 CFM carbs (or injector body), 9 pounds per cu. in, and pump gas. Expensive engines don't make big horsepower if they can't breathe; can you say "cheap racing"? Tires, carbs, weight, and fuel are easy and quick to tech.

I don't think that purse / payouts are the main factor in attracting new participants; I believe it is the initial cost of building a car and then maintaining it. I started racing in 1969 and was in and out of the sport 3 or 4 times until I quit the last time in 2004. The payout was never really a factor, because I raced as a hobby and didn't depend on winnings to keep racing. It was nice to win occasionally, but I made my living in a different job. I finally quit when it just became too costly to build and maintain a race car.
