Have you ever heard of Joey Doiron? Me neither.
UNTIL last night when I watched him win the 200 lapper at Auburndale. I like this guy! I hope he sticks around for the World Series at NSS.
Joey is a competitor from the PASS series who towed down from Maine to run the opening event. He and Florida driver Joe Boyd went at it for the entire 200 laps, and it wasn't settled until Joey made an open-track pass for the lead with 8 laps to go.
Mr. Boyd and Mr. Doiron put on a heck of a race. They had some supporting players, but it was these two who went after each other: swapping the lead under green a few times, or when running side by side after a restart. They ran about as clean as you can at Auburndale (meaning no one went off on the hook), although Joey did rough up Jeff Scofield early on and lived to tell the tale.
Best thing about Joey Doiron? He was very aggressive and never gave up, not for a lap.
The PASS series brought some good racers to Florida, including LM stars Ben Rowe and Jay Fogelman. I got a kick out of Jay's son Tate Fogelman. He finished 7'th (I think) and ran a very clean race. The problem is that this 12 year old driver, although he is capable, is too young in my opinion to be doing what he is doing. He is another in the parade of very young drivers who will build our sport in the near future, but who have us all worried at the present time.
At 150 laps, only 3 cars had dropped out, and there had been very little lapped traffic. The attrition ticked up toward the end, but everyone stayed pretty racey the whole time.
It was a good night for Auburndale Speedway! They had a big crowd, and it looked like everyone went home happy. Auburndale has the best bathrooms that I've seen at a track, and really the whole place is neat, clean and ready to race. If I could make one suggestion for a capital improvement, work on the PA system. It was pretty weak and very difficult to hear. Now that NSS has invested in speakers, it would be a nice change to see at Auburndale too.
