Do you remember the original "Jalopy King" at Riverside. ? (Tuesday night programs.)

To all others; How about the Flintstone Flyer ?
You are 100% correct about Jocko's real first name being Chauncey. Guess if my real first name was Chauncey I'd rather be known as Jocko too.

Jap was Tony or as you said Anthony.

I use to go to the races at Riverside quite often on Tuesdays for the jalopy races with my dad. I was a little squirt back then Very good racing with many of the drivers being the same ones who raced at West Haven Speedway (Savin Rock) on Saturday nights. There were a lot of great drivers who moved up to become quite successful modified drivers. Names that come to mind are Bill Greco, Dan Galullo, Lou Carangelo, Charlie Centinaro, Danny Gaudiosi, Johnny Cambino, Lou Toro, Jimmy Cash, Jap Membrino, and Tony Mordino to name some of the really prominent drivers.

Johnny Cambino used to be called "King Cambo" so I'll go with him as "Jalopy King". If you are talking about original, it may have been before my time and I'd never be able to guess.

As for "The Flinestone Flyer" that was none other than Mike Duval who was quite the terror in dirt late model racing in his day with the F-1. He traveled just about everywhere and won just about everywhere.

Tweedy is correct about Todd Gibson being the Flintstone Flyer. He beat Duval to it by 20 years or so.

      How about:

      Rags
      Parnelli
      Mutley
      The Monk
      Jumpin'
      Socks
      Pee Wee

      The Snake
      The Mongoose
      Fuzzy
      Dutch

Mongoose - Tom Mckewen (sp?) NHRA fame
          Snake - Don Prudhomme

These were my two favorite hotwheels cars growing up.

What about the Flyin Hawaiin? another of my favorites glad he survived his brush with death back in the day.

Just wondering why no one has mentioned "Mr Excitement". One of the top five late model drivers in my opinion. If Jimmy Cope was there it was a good race.

Hey Mr. Berti, we must have been there at the same time. The Jalopy King I was looking for was Lenny Ransome in the Riiska yellow X. Always in a battle with Galulu, Gaudiosi and the remainder of the names you provided. Never got to Savin Rock, although my Dad used to go there frequently. When I went to Riverside on Tuesday it was usually a combo of Riverside & Plainville jalopies. Tom Gallant a fantastic announcer. great shows.

                Few more nicknames;

                The o (oh) show
                Wild Child
Fat Albert (cheating as this was a car owner)
                Tall Cool One
                Butch
                Toby
                Buddy

                    • Going against my own principles here.....

....but only because I'm bored sideways here at the fire station and I'm checking up on you bozos......

Okay....since nobody has mentioned it yet:

                      Herk

Give his name and what it was short for.

Mr. Westerman and Binner are excluded from this one because they're just too smart for their own britches.

                      • Herk? Jim Hurtubise.

Come on Osmo, give us a real question.

The Flyin' hawaiian Danny Ongias. I think he was one of the most aggressive and dangerous drivers of his day.

Hey Dave I know you gave me my nickname, did you pen any other ones? Hmmm, I can think of one!

Yes, I remember Len Ransom driving the Martin Riiska X car which for one reason or another stopped racing at Riverside and went to Lebanon Valley Speedway to be driven by Butch Jelley. Ransom went on to drive the Walt Cole #33. You are absolutely right that Ransom won a lot of jalopy races on Tuesdays at The Park.

Tom Galen was one of the all time great speedway announcers. Amazing all the nicknames he came up with for drivers who raced at The Park that stuck with them throughout their racing careers.
