Just got back from Volusia with night #2 for the UMP Mods. and night #1 for the All Star sprints. Good news! The fields were big and the stands were packed!
I sat there talking to Edm all night, so I missed some details, but there were around 30 All Stars and at nearly 80 of the modifieds. The stands were tougher to estimate, but I am guessing the place was 80% full. Yes, the weather was perfect too, so of course that helped, and the fans responded. Although I love cold weather, I have to admit that is was neat to be at the Winter Nationals and not have to fight the weather at all.
No one gives an interview like Kenny Wallace! He made the re-draw sound interesting, and then after winning the feature he really got cranked up! Most racers don't have a clue what to do with a mic. Too bad, we'd be better off if everyone could entertain like Kenny.
Im no dirt track expert, but it looked like the track had a great deal of grip early in the night. Most everyone was driving in like a pavement car, and the sprints were going the same speed in the heats. It took a long time to dry off and take a bit of rubber. It was better by feature time, but the leaders really had to struggle to lap anybody.
Tony Stewart won his heat from the front row. That was cool, although he started 21'st in the feature and could not advance.
Edm had a few of the famous pork chop sammichs, and I had an over-priced gyro ($8!). I'll be back at Volusia, but for now its on to New Smyrna!
