  • Volusia Dirtcar Nationals, night #2

Just got back from Volusia with night #2 for the UMP Mods. and night #1 for the All Star sprints. Good news! The fields were big and the stands were packed!

I sat there talking to Edm all night, so I missed some details, but there were around 30 All Stars and at nearly 80 of the modifieds. The stands were tougher to estimate, but I am guessing the place was 80% full. Yes, the weather was perfect too, so of course that helped, and the fans responded. Although I love cold weather, I have to admit that is was neat to be at the Winter Nationals and not have to fight the weather at all.

No one gives an interview like Kenny Wallace! He made the re-draw sound interesting, and then after winning the feature he really got cranked up! Most racers don't have a clue what to do with a mic. Too bad, we'd be better off if everyone could entertain like Kenny.

Im no dirt track expert, but it looked like the track had a great deal of grip early in the night. Most everyone was driving in like a pavement car, and the sprints were going the same speed in the heats. It took a long time to dry off and take a bit of rubber. It was better by feature time, but the leaders really had to struggle to lap anybody.

Tony Stewart won his heat from the front row. That was cool, although he started 21'st in the feature and could not advance.

Edm had a few of the famous pork chop sammichs, and I had an over-priced gyro ($8!). I'll be back at Volusia, but for now its on to New Smyrna!

THATS what I'm talkin bout.... a real report from real fans. Thanks to you, EDM, and Billy Badd for updates. Would've loved to be there, but will be at NSS Thurs, Fri, and possibly Sun. VSP is on the hit-list for next Wed. Opening night of DIRT Mods. Got some recruiting to do......

Have to second the previous thoughts. I think they sent around 15 of the sprints packing come feature time including schatz. Amazingly he was the worst of the tony stewart camp.

I accomplished all of my goals, pork chop sammich, no lenghty restroom visit and got to see an entire rear end assembly "naked" in the hauler...off a sprint car not any of the sprint car women floating about, though that would have worked too. I was amazed at how basic it really seems to be, very modular.

Twice, I saw something that was from all appearances A real safety concern. Either a metal wheel cover or air cleaner cover came loose. The first off a sprint and took off like a death frisbee out of Mad Maxx or somethin..cleared the light posts and landed by the haulers in turn one, it was hauling ass! The second one was from a mod and got up in the air then stuck straight up in the track till it got run over. I always thought those were foam rubber or sometjing, these appears to have enough mass to really screw you up.

Another speedweeks off to a great start. Be back tonight.

Bubba, we were right in front of that wheel cover that flew up and stuck in the track. You must have been nearby.

Those pork chop sandwiches are worth the trip by themselves.

Yea, I don't know, or want to know what he does to those pork chops, but mmmm,mmmmmm..his lemonade for $4 is not so good however.

We were right at the top of the stairs between the last two sections. I might have run into you guys as you were coming in, I had to run to the truck for somrthing and I think we crossed paths at the gate, never met the elusive edm, and I am bad with faces so not sure.

Well... here are my notes from last night...
First off, it was worth the price of admission to attend an event at Volusia in the middle of February and not have to put on a jacket...
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!! NO CURLY FRIES GUY THIS YEAR... Boy I was looking forward to that, but what can you do... Did get a pork chop sandwich and it was good but certainly wasn't worth six bucks...
I thought the crowd was actually under what it should be for a show of this caliber but it was far and away better than last year when it was nut-freezing cold... There are a lot of fans that just aren't down here yet and the ticket price probably keeps a lot of the locals at home...
Danny Lasoski absolutely owns VSP... It was his 18th feature win there... 15th on the 1/2 mile to go with three on the old 1/3 mile.
Had to feel bad for Kraig Kinser as he was just as fast as Lasoski but got trapped by lapped traffic including Tony Stewart who was just plain in the way using up space...
Smoke won his heat but a poor qualifying time put him 21st at the start and he never really did much... He was clean-shaven and actually didn't look as "chunky" as he has in recent times LOL...
Can't believe Jason Meyers is going to retire soon as he could easily go on to several more great years... Started dead last in the feature after mechanical problems in qualifying and ended up ninth...
Sprints ran 4 heats, a dash and a B-Main with no caution flags... Feature had two cautions for Jac Haudenschild's stalled car and late when Steve Kinser blew out a left rear while running fourth... One red flag when Sam Hafertape, Jr. had a tire shred and he flipped once after hitting the cushion with the rim...
Some of the guys who DID NOT make the A-Main: Donny Schatz, Fred Rahmer, Danny Smith, Greg Hodnett and Terry McCarl who was really out to lunch all night...
While quite a few of the guys retreat to their haulers when they aren't on the track, Steve Kinser was out standing between the grandstands in turn one smoking cigarettes and watching the Modified heats...
The UMP Mods were a much better show than the Sprints... I really don't know how they kept from having more crashes than they did because these guys drive like maniacs LOL...
28 cars started the Mod feature and 50, that's right, 50 cars were sent back to the trailer... There are tracks here in FL that can't get a field of 50 cars!!
Kenny Wallace was hooked up! Old man Kenny Schrader looked good too...
Missed a lot of the Mod names because the speakers in turn one of the pits were pretty lousy...
They had 74 Mods on Tuesday and 8 of those did not race on Wednesday yet they had a field of 78... That means they gained an extra 16 cars last night...
All in all, not a bad night and no one got torn up real bad in the Sprints and there's so many Modifieds it really doesn't make any difference... Wish I could afford to go again tonight but it is what it is... If you are going to catch a dirt show this week, I suggest you make it out there tonight...
I like Sprints but $39 for the WoO Friday/Saturday is way to steep for regular working people so I'll be avoiding those shows...

Forgot about Steve Kinser's tire issue. He had a left rear going down to almost flat under the caution. He kept "testing it" under caution by gunning it and running a corner or two. I guess it seemed OK to him, what a set of cajones. Going into 1 full speed it exploded, no flip. Then instead of looking for the wrecker, he pushes the car by himself initially down the banking and into the pits to get another tire on. His crew had their collective heads up their arses or they could have gotten him back out. That guy is something else!

Agreed about Kinser. 130 mph with a flat? No problem!

Beware the gyro sandwiches! $8 and not so good.

Regarding the announcers: those guys know what they are doing. They knew the drivers, the procedures, they were showmen, in short they were really good. HOWEVER, that being said I still miss Joe Dirt. He has that distinctive voice and style that I'll always identify with the Winter Nationals.

I see it is not just nascar as two of the four sprinters shown had naked wing panels where a primary sponsor would be. Does anyone know what Bubbas greivance with USAC is. If he is sincere about not letting them return it sure would be a golden opportunity for someone like North Florida Speedway to get some national exposure by picking up the event.

Great show last night. I also had the Pork Chop Sandwich lol, wow that guy makes a killing selling those. I thought that wheel cover was going to land in Ormond Beach!

While I am rambling about things, I was impressed with the back-to-back pace of the show - no real built in breaks, from qualifying thru heats and mains it was solid racing. I know a lot of places that could take a page out of the operations manual from last night. Hope they pull it off again tonight.

and Steve Kinser, I don't see how he can fit in his car with a pair like that!

$6 for a pork chop sandwich is about what I would expect for a special event.

Only complaints, NO MINI DONUTS, the peanut people were not there and the guys taking care of the bathrooms offered to "shake it" for Rex for an extra dollar and he didn't have change.

They did run a very good show...
Warm-ups, single-car qualifying, 4 Sprint heats, dash, 30 lap A main, Modified group qualifying, 6 Mod heats, 3 B-mains, feature & a non-qualifiers race after the feature and I still got home to Orlando by 1AM taking my time!
