OK, great. Glad you were able to finally see the pics.

Yep, give ol' James he_ _ about them britches. Tell him the Brady Bunch called and their dad wants his pants back! - LOL.

BTW - James is one hell-uva mechanic in his own right. I remember just about the time you think you're getting all your gonna get outa the motor James would tweak it again and really wake it up!

Some of you may not be aware that Late Model ace Billy Gill also piloted a Sprint car back in the day.

Here he is shown taking a victory lap on the cover of the July 10-11, 1970 Golden Gate Speedway Program in the #2 Arrow Plumbing Special.

Gill was always a threat no matter what he drove or where he chose to race.

Sunshine Speedway - 1962. Mike Pabst sits in the middle on the nerf bar of his Circle #98 Sportsman Coupe.

So far the other two fellas are unidentified so if anybody could help me identify those two guys I would appreciate it.

        Love those whitewalls Mike!

Get a load of those pits!

This is one of the reasons I just shake my head now-a-days when I hear the bitchin & moanin from these young guys about not getting a slab to work off of.

Sunshine Speedway - 1962. Mike Pabst takes a victory lap for a win.

Gotta love that Mack Bulldog hood ornament! Iron sights maybe??

I wonder if after this payday Mike was able to put a whole windshield in the car? – LOL

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Did someone call a Taxi?

Cush Revette in his #7 hangs it out on the outside of Johnny Jackson’s Sunshine Taxi Special with Kenny Walters on the inside in the #12 make a Taxi sandwich in Turn 2.

Thanks to Rick Aurthur and John Bear Berg for their help in identifying some of the folks in these photos!

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Cush Revette in his all too familiar sideways position in front of the 4P’s Pontiac, driver unknown.

Gee, I wonder what happened just prior to this shot being taken? Some payback maybe? – LOL

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Cush Revette again in the middle of the action on the front chute this time behind the 4P’s Pontiac.

Kinda makes ya wonder if this was the predecessor photo of the one above eh?

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Jim Alvis is hard into the wall here at the end of the front chute at the entrance to the pits in the #21 Bryan’s Tire Winged Modified Special.

Officials & crew checking his condition while the fans gather at the fence.

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Jim Alvis is sideways here coming off the turn in the #21 Bryan’s Tire Winged Modified Special in front of the Crosley-bodied #10 Modified, driver unknown.

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. The ‘Lil General’ Dave Scarborough (still with helmet on) discusses the incident that led up to his severely damaged Bi-Rite #5-D Winged Modified sitting in the foreground.

It would be fun to speculate or caption what the mechanic is saying there with his hands out-stretched.

My guess would be “Geezus David, I just got through fixin this thing from last weekend!”

Dave was one of the best in the business from our area no matter what class he chose to drive in and he will be sorely missed.

          RIP Dave.

Kip Pierce is shown here taking a victory lap in his #27 Modified Sportsman at Sunshine Speedway in the early 60’s.

This car would later become the now famous Toonerville Trolley.

Sunshine Speedway – Early 60’s. Cush Revette is sideways here off of Turn 4 in his #7 Modified Sportsman in front of Will Cagle in his #11 Sound-Equipment Winged-Modified.

Again, not too hard to guess what probably happened just before this shot was taken.

Remember the NASCAR Baby Grand Division... before it became the Dash Series??? Found these photos from a North Wilkesboro race in 1977 with the #28 Vega of Larry Caudill on the pole and the #14 Monza of J. V. Reins on the outside pole... Lillian Vandiver, sister of NASCAR Winston Cup driver Jim Vandiver, ran off-and-on in the Baby Grands, then married the guy in the #46 Larry Hoopaugh... Lillian always comes to Daytona each year and stops by the Archives to tell some stories... very nice lady...

Who remembers "Honest Charley" Card. He was a pioneer of the American high-performance automotive industry, using primarily a mail-order business out of his shop in Chattanooga, TN. Nicknamed “Honest Charley” and “Honest Hisself,” Card earned those monikers not from his successful speed shop but from a restaurant he operated in Chattanooga before going into the high-performance parts business. On busy days at the restaurant, Card would move the cash register outside on the sidewalk so there would be more room inside for customers. The story goes that he put a hand-lettered sign on the register that just said, "how honest are you?" He then let the customers start paying outside by themselves, and make their own change.

                        Photos

Many thaks to Dave and Jim for the great shots. The black and white shot of the three cars at Eau Gallie was from 1957 with Stan Kross sideways in front in Happy Stiegle's #4, Orlando's Buster Burt in the #2 sedan and Jim McGuirk in the black and yellow #1 trying to avoid the other two.

The color shot of Dick Joslin was a day race at Orlando, possibly Thanksgiving day in 1958 as he track actually raced on Turkey Day for several years.

The last smaller black and white shot at Eau Gallie shows race sponsor Ralph Allen, driver Jim McGuirk in Happy Stiegles's #4 '37 Ford couple and flagman Stan Kross who retired from driving to assume the flagman's role and later promoted the track under his Kris Kross Promotions banner. McGuirk filled the driver's seat vacated by Kross for Stiegle's Palm Cove Garage racers.

No kidding! That is really cool. Bill Boye is a friend of mine who helped us on our Rolex team. He was instrumental in us getting Jack Atckinson, the legendary former Brumos Porsche team crew chief to crew chief for us in the 2008 24hrs of Daytona.

Cagle and Possum Jones both drove this 1960 Pontiac modified for owner Jimmy Caudle from Satellite Beach. It was an ex-Cotton Owens Grand National mount. Cagle's first big track start did come at Daytona but it was in 1960 and he was part of the horriffic 37 car pile up on lap one off turn 4 driving a #12 1955 Chevy for well known New Jersey car owner Lucky Jordan. Cagle was not injured but his car was too badly damaged to continue.

These my actual notes from the 1973 IMCA Sprint Car race at Golden Gate Speedway... To my knowledge, this was the only race Jan Opperman ever won on asphalt... He was driving Harry Campbell's #11...
