How about someone going around to all the lumber yards in the area, and posting a sign that offers 1 free admission for every 2 x 10 board donated to the track? Bring a board, get in free....

Not only could the lumber yards get involved (I would think there is a certain percentage of un-useable boards due to minor warpage), the contractors who buy from them are frequently faced with some un-used materials. A free admission to the track might be a better option to some than just having more firewood in the stockpile.

This could be a win-win situation. Helps the track, finds a usefull home for a few unwanted planks, and could bring in a bunch of new people to racing.

    Just a thought.......

There are county codes that specify the type of lumber utilized.

Maybe get some businesses to donate a few boards. It is not like you have to do them all at once. Start at one section and put a few in at a time until the job is complete. The lumber yard idea is a GOOD one. Could be someones personal project, I don't think if you pull up with a trailer full of boards the track owners would run you off.
I would donate a few boards.

"There are county codes that specify the type of lumber utilized."

I'm sure you're right about that. Obviously, the needs would be different from track to track also. Length, width, thickness, age of the board, amount of warpage that would be acceptable... I'm not saying to let everyone in that brings a 1 foot length of 2 x 4, but I'm sure the track knows what their needs are.

Bring a dozen boards, and a dozen friends...

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. This could create a nice partnership between the local tracks, and the local business community.

Oh.... and also plan on having plenty of beer on hand to sell...!

Got to be able to buy the wood somewhere. I could probably find out the spec from one of my customers.

youre right RSB, the stuff is terrible. Maybe Depot or Lowes would donate some if a big sign was put up at the track? I dont know, I TRY to support those that support racing.

At NSS the boards have fiberglass covers on the wood and the wood last forever.. at OSW the bleachers are wood and it takes apx 100 boards each year. They get inspected each year and brough up to code.
Some of the frames in the pits were built buy a Tampa ferm in 1955 and still look great.
The wood that was used for seats is now over $100 a board so most tracks use PT pine and it does have some knots and can break if you dont keep a watch on it.
I rember spending $10,000 on wood at little lakeland the first time we put wood on it.
The ins co inspect them each year but things do happen.
Its sad but part of the sport. Its like a sprint car on the wrong side of the fience or a loose tire.
If you were at a baseball game and got hit buy the ball then what would happen.
Offering to help is great. The labor is a big help to the tracks.

                      good point Don

What about the guy that leaned out to catch a foul ball for his son in Texas, flipped over the rail and was killed in front of his son? Its very sad but like I said, this stuff does happen. Guess we could sit home in our living room all the time but I'd probably be parralized by a stroke then lightning would strike and burn the house down!!! (not sorry about the spelling)
