Earnhardt just rolled over, #3 on a Toyota is blasphemy.

I agree about Earnhardt. I cannot understand why a racer wants to support Toyota and advertize it all over his car when chances he has a G.M, Ford or Dodge under that hood. If he wants to ron a Toylioder, at least get the 3 off of it(so disrespectful). Let's support the ones that help build this country initially (as far as auto manufactures)!!

I agree with the #3 but toyota emploies as many people in the US as any of them. They have plants all over the country..they sponsor race cars. so are they a american built car?
Most of the parts for ford chevy and dodge come from some other country.
The us auto worker gets paid 3 times as much and does half the work..Thanks to the union. I alwase tried to do a good days work for a good days pay.

I think we should buy all american but it hard when we dont make very many things here anymore.
It sure does need fixing but its not toyotas falt.

Don, But in the end ALL the profits go back to Japan. I guess I'm just too much "Old School"!!! I remember when I first got into the auto repair industry, all I needed was a 10, 12, 14 and 17 MM wrench and socket because there weren't that many imports. They are American Assembeled cars. Next time you go by a Toyota dealer, look at the sticker on the window and notice where the parts come from. It's called "Origin of Parts". Most all of them are 80% foregin, if not more.

You ain't as old school as me in my days on the track I never heard of a 10,12,14 or 17MM wrench it was 7/16, 1/2, 9/16 and 5/8 Inch wrench. I got a rude awakening in, I think, early 90's when I tried to put a clutch in my wifes Mustang. None of my wrenches fit any tinmg. It had an austrailian Transmission and the clutch was made in brazil I think it was. Made me scratch my head and get rid of her Mustang after I paid some one to replace the clutch. Bob...

There needs to be a tarriff put on everything imported into this country to make the price the same as American made. I know, no more $15 shoes from Korea and China, they would become $30. But maybe then jobs would come back to the USA. But are all of you willing to pay twice as much for most things? I mean, we all complain about Wal-Mart importing most everything from China, but they are the largest retailer in the USA. We all, me included speak with a forked tongue when it caome to Jap, Korean and Chinese made. It goes a lot deeper than Toyota and Chevrolet.

You would have to stop watching tv and the radio is out
How will we do any banking or buy food.
When you do find some little thing that we did make in this country a sliped under the wire or crosed the river mex did the work for half the wages and that is not so bad if they had to pay taxes.

we need a goverment with some backbone.
use the same rules that they use on us.
                  Export taxes

This WAS done in the Forklift industry. The foreign makes were kicking ass on the pricing (and quality) end of the business. The American manufacturers got the government to impose tariffs on the imports.

Soooo, what did the foreign companies do??? They built plants in the US, using American labor, and several US-supplied parts, but NO Labor Unions. This avoided the "import" tariffs.

The result??? The American companies either folded, or took their plants overseas. They cut their own throats on the deal. Now, the Japanese and Korean companies are dominating that industry, just like they do in the Automotive industry.

Be careful what you wish for... you might just get it...!

We got Jap lifts in our shop that aren't but about 3 to 5 years old. Guess what? Most of them are broke in one way or another. They are between 3 and 5 years old. Most of them that are broke have to do with the safety locks and hydraulics on a couple. Can't get parts, so they have to be replaced. They were bought because guess why??? They were cheap!!! The one's they replaced were 15 to 20years old. They were made in Germany. It was , as I was told, cheaper to replace them. Not now. 2 lifts to replace, after only 3-5 years, (now $6000 between original purchase and now replacement) times 1 lift to repair originally (was$2000) after 15 years, times at least 6 more lifts = $$$$$$$$

Dave... I'm not trying to suggest that the foreign products are better in ALL industries, just in the industry that I'm most familiar with. In ours, the quality AND price are better with the foreign makes.

My point was, don't just dive into the pool until all the research has been done. In the Forklift industry, Allis-Chalmers went out completely, Hyster and Yale both sold out to Japanese outfits, Clark has bounced from one investor to another with nothing but downhill results, and Baker isnow part of Linde (Germany). Caterpiller has NEVER built their own units, just private labeling of someone elses product.

On the flip side, the number 1 rated units are Toyotas (built in Indiana), while Komatsu (Georgia), Mitsubishi/Caterpillar (Houston), Nissan (unsure where the mfg. plant is), and TCM have all built plants in the USA. They put quite a few Americans to work. The "American" manufacturers have all gone away.

I'd rather we, as Americans, get at least some of the pie, instead of no pies at all....
