      Some suggestions for Desoto.....

      Hello everyone,
I am a long time racer and fan. I am pretty new to the St. Petersburg area. On July 9th I make my first visit to Desoto Speedway, so this was my first impression of the place.

$15 admission for a regular show. Seems a little steep, but not a deal breaker for me. You are not allowed to bring in any food or beverages. COME ON!!!! That is just bad customer service, and is sure to help chase away any casual race fans. I watched the girl working at the front gate get into a heated argument with a guy who wanted to carry in a bottle of Gatoraid. A paying customer should have the OPTION to buy food at the track, not be "forced" into it.

Overall the place is great facility, in a great location. (Surrounded by corn fields and such - not many neighbors to complain about noise). The bleachers really need some new boards and paint. The track itself is pretty nice, and pretty racy.

I saw four classes run, with a total of twenty cars. I saw the modifieds and three other classes. I'm not sure what the other classes were called - the announcer never told us.

I love stock car racing, and I HATE to see tracks close. However this track gave me (A die hard racing fan.) little reason to come back. There is no way to attract any casual racing fans with this level of customer service, and like it or not, we need plenty of casual fans to keep the cash flowing and keep our racetracks in business.

I truly hope that Desoto speedway can turn things around and start doing a better job before it is too late.

Florida for many years since the 80's, has had too many tracks and too long of a season (all year!) Over-supply for the fans that remain. That also causes poor quality racing with over-extended car owners. The fact is, some tracks should just disappear and let the survivors be the viable one's to attract the cars and the fans that would have to drive a little to see a race. Car quality would go up because of fewer races (less wear and tear).

Once a month racing with a track in each corner of the state should do it! Going to races every week is a grind, not just for participants, but for fans also, and one can't expect that loyalty each week from a large number of patrons. Heck, look at the Rays.

Very well said. There are too many tracks and not enough cars. In any business, the strong survive. Remember when Sunshine closed up? Most of those cars ended up at Citrus and Auburndale. If some of these track owners don't change their ways they will share the same fate. Stop living in the 1980's and get with the times before its too late.

My experience with several over the years is that it's an inefficient waste of time. (Unless of course you like to socialize at mixers and drink!) They were invented in the days of small towns, where you advertised with your neighbors by handshakes and knocking on the local businesses door. In this TV, radio and internet fast paced era, those days aren't around anymore.

Nice idea Ricky but not a realistic one.

New fans are created by excitement and media exposure. Us oldies are literally dying off!
Any chamber after hours, ribbon cuttings, etc. I've been too are packed with people, just walking around shaking hands , maybe passing out a few tickets etc, great Idea. But you have to be consistant. I went to NSS for a ribbon cutting a few yrs ago and was very impressed, as were others, for the cost of membership, what, a couple hundred dollars, its cheap advertisement. Just like posting upcoming schedules on here, hey, its FREE!!!
Maybe where you're from Legeng its a waste of time but here in the New Smyrn,a Edgewater area there are good turnouts and friendships made.

I love racing at Desoto. But my personal experiances and those I have witnessed have not been such that would entice a return anytime soon...

I watched a drivers wife write a check for close to $400 to get family and crew into the pits, only to be told she better pour out that can of Pepsi before she went in...

My sister was sent back to the car with a half eaten box of cheezits because they were not bought at the track...

Paying full admission into the pits for kids under 6 and new borns is crazy...

Seen a guy in a lower division get DQ'ed because his lugnuts were painted bright orange, and not the track mandated yellow...

The list could go on and on...

Well rusty we tryed something like that at DSS in the 80s and the SLM drivers built sportsman cars and it didnt work. the reg drivers left. Then a few years latter it was tryed with mods..Dick Anderson showed up with a bad @ss car and won all the races I dont think he lost any races for a year.
we learn what not to do but we dont rember and make the same mistakes agin. Yea i know its a new time.
I think that some promoter is going to think out side of the box and come up with a new idea. Lets all hope..

I am the announcer that you claim did not announce the classes. I have been doing this for over 10 years mostly at Desoto. I announce every class not only as they come out on the track for the line up, but at every caution when I do the running order and at the end of winners circle interviews.

Now what I propose to you is to e-mail me personaly at rick_anges@yahoo.com (remember I am the moderator of this board so I will know your real e-mail address) and you will be my guest free of charge. We can sit down and have a face to face talk about the track.

                Looking forward to your e-mail....

I am taking my sportsman to Desoto for the first time this weekend. This will be the first time that my car has been on a different track other than Auburndale. I am looking forward to the experience and hopefully it doesn't rain...
