I believe that you have this reversed. Allison's tire was going down on the pace lap (reported by himself and others). He started the race, spun and the while sitting sideways, almost stationary, he was hit by Jocko.

Oh - and look how *packed* the backstretch grandstands are. Would love to see the frontstretch side.
Yes, for all three. The fourth driver was Bob Strait, who went on to have success with the ASA Series, and then in ARCA.

Below are the qualifying results from that race.

This will probably be an easy one for some of you....

This photo is from the Short Track National Championship 200 at Rockford Speedway, during the late 70's or early 80's. Dick Trickle set fast time that year, with Mark Martin second. They inverted the first five rows for the 200.

Trivia Question: Can anyone name the four cars in this photo, that started in the first two rows of the feature?

HINT: There are no slouches in that foursome.... One driver won 16 ARCA races, including scoring an amazing 115 Top-Ten ARCA finishes, One driver won four USAC Stock Car races on the Milwaukee Mile, One driver won over 600 features including wins at the World Series of Asphalt in New Smyrna, while One driver went on to win the Nascar Winston Cup Championship!

Jim Hunt (Name's on the roof ).

Ol' J.W. used to put on some hellacious shows on dirt...he even sponsored some old NASCAR Late Model Sportsmen cars over the years; I think in '78 at Daytona for the 300, Donnie Allison drove a J.W. Hunt Chevy; I believe Butch Lindley drove one of his cars at one time or another.

Tampa racer, whose father was more nationally known... but not for being a driver himself.

Easy one... but a very cool wedge-bodied style DLM.

See the door ding on the left side? Happened on the first corner of the first lap. Knocked ole Paul "Cool Hand Luke" out in the grass. He did a 360 in the grass and reentered in last place. Paul passed at least 1 car per lap for the next 20 laps, before the car over heated and he had to pit. When asked about it later, he said that it was just racing! Mr. P. L. Newman was a real racer!!

Officially, he was entered as "P.L. Newman"... but in Hollywood, everyone knew him as "Paul Newman", who was also destined to be a CART team owner with Carl Haas with Newman/Haas Racing.
