I've worked for a business owner, been a business owner, served in the military, been in a union, and worked as a public employee. One thing for sure, politicians and business owners will do as little as possible for the worker. Unions are the result of the rich business owners screwing the worker. Public unions are the result of politicians screwing the worker.

I'm glad that train got squashed. I never thought it would be able to support itself financially. Burden on taxpayers in the long run.

Unions support democrats because they normally do what is best for the worker.

I was a republican because of my beliefs in working for a living without handouts. Now I am disgusted with the republicans for attacking the workers pensions with lies to the public and the democrats spending boatloads of money make me just as disgusted.

I would like to see a whole new political party. One that does what is right for the workers, yet supports business owners. There should be a balance, but only a tug of war these days.

I agree Carol. Last election I hardly looked at the party or name of who was running. I looked for the word "incumbant" and voted for the other guy. MAYBE, just MAYBE with all newbies in office they'll thin k about their constituants instead of the lobbyists. The only incumbant bI voted for was John Mica, and I'm not so sure about him either.

Tuna, I am a Teacher/Educator and I don't get 3-4 weeks off at Christmas. I get 2 weeks, unpaid. Thanksgiving, unpaid. Summer, unpaid. Only paid Holiday is MLK Day and Presidents Day (I think). And I don't make near the 60,000 something that the other guy says they do up north. I have to budget for a year. In fact when I got into some 21 years ago I took a $14,000 pay cut. Thought I could make a difference and was looking at the BIG picture at the end. Now Scott and the idiots in Tallahasse have destroyed it. If I known back then what I know now I would have been better off staying in industry. Too late (and old) now to go back.

Not that I give a darn but I don't know why that was directed at me??? I dont care if you get a day off or a month off at Christmas. It has nothing to do with me.

dd, sorry, I just looked back, I posted something like that last March, had honestly forgot it. You say you budget for a yr, you're lucky, I cant budget a month ahead, must be nice to know what your pay will be for a yr ahead. All I know is any friends I have my age that were teachers are long since retired and they had a LOT more time off than I ever did, But then again thats Maine and this is Florida, and things ARE a lot differant here than in Maine. No offense, we all could use a little more wage.

As a teacher in Massachusetts, consider this: the state boasts the third highest average teacher salaries in the nation—$68,000 in 2009-2010—according to the National Education Association.

The average salary paid to a Florida public school teacher in the 2009-10 school year was $46,696.

Apparently you are not aware of the fact that Florida is the only state in the United States in which public school educators and administrators do not pay into a state teachers retirement fund.

There are many states that do not pay their teachers as well as Florida does that make it mandatory for teachers to pay into a state retirement fund. It is time that Florida teachers pay in like everyone else and not be a burden on the taxpayers.

Your figures are way off when it comes to the average salary for teachers in each state for 2009. The average teacher salary in Florida for the year 2009 was $50,180. The average salary for Massachusetts teachers in 2009 was $59,640. My source is teachersalaryinfo.com. The salary comfort rating based on how comfortably the teacher can live on the salary they get is better for the Florida teacher. The ranking for Florida is 26th while Massachusetts is 34th. My source is teacherportal.com.

Would you like to have to pay the taxes that people who live in Massachusetts have to pay? Massachusetts is not called "Taxachusetts" for nothing. I pay far less in property tax on my home in Florida then I paid in Massachusetts for a house of the same value. Massachusetts has one of the nation's highest property taxes. There is no state income tax in Florida, while Massachusetts imposes two tax rates, 5.3 percent or 12 percent, depending upon the type of income reported. The general sales tax is higher in Massachusetts than in Florida. There is a motor vehicle excise tax in Massachusetts that Florida doesn't have.

Let's take a look at the recent average cost of living figures for each state reflected by salary, state tax rate, and the state consumer index. The average cost of living in the state of Florida is $27,579.24. By comparison the average cost in Massachusetts is $36,767. The source for this was CityRating.com.

Don't give me any sob story about it being unfair for Florida teachers to pay in for their retirement. It is unfair that they got away with it so long. The jig is up so pay up like every other teacher does in the other 49 states.
