Hell the first 10 years I lived in Florida you couldn't travel it so why should this be any different?? Don't fret though, the dot and people that govern that stuff have their head up there asses all over!!
Around here they claim they have no money to fix the roads yet they can give million dollar contracts to have the freakin trees trimmed back. I guess that's so when the pot holes jack your ass over in the ditches you won't hit any trees!!!!!!

Rick Scott doesn't give a rats ass about education or public service in the state. He is concerned about making money for his friends in business (and that ain't you or me). He got elected by the buzz word/sound byte crowd and now we all will pay.

He is destroying one of the basic tenets of our society - public education. Without it 99% of you could not even read this post. My wife is a non union teacher with accolades and awards to warrant that she would do well under some merit pay plan..however there are several segments of students who nobody will want to teach anymore because they don't show large gains - special ed and gifted children. The list goes on about what is wrong with the slash and burn mentality, but nobody in Tallahassee is interested in fixing it, just cutting budget.

We are fortunate in that we don't to rely on my wife's income and she does it because she loves it. Most teachers are not in that situation and cant afford cuts to any of the "benefits" they have now.

Similar efforts are affecting police/fire/emt you name..this guy is destroying - not fixing things.

Those numbers are pure bullsh1t with regard to an annual pension number.

However..on their topic of high speed rail, I do agree that it is useless without decent mass transit on either end of it which neither city has. Not to mention ridership numbers are sketchy at best. So, I do agree with that alien looking criminal on this one.

Yes we of our generation can read. BUT not thoses kids that are coming out of school NOW! I saw figures out last week that 82% the kids now adays can't read at an 8th grade level when they get out of school. Teacher and others CAN afford to pay a % into their retirement. I know I had to do it at my job. And they raised the % twice when I was working. I was glad to do it. I knew that by doing it I was making sure my retirement check would always be there!!!. Paying 5% into their retirement is a he$$ of as lot better then getting np pay check. There are less and less of US out here pay for her and all fire and police pay checks. And a lot of us out here that still work haven't had a pay raise in years! Thoses you are talking about can't say that.

I had to pay into the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement System towards my retirement pension. I was shocked to see that Florida teachers don't have to do likewise. Any state employee, for that matter, should have to pay into a fund for their retirement. No free retirement income at taxpayer expense. You wonder why this state is in a financial crisis, well this is one of the biggest factors.

But the teachers make a lot more up there then they do here man.

As a teacher in Massachusetts, consider this: the state boasts the third highest average teacher salaries in the nation—$68,000 in 2009-2010—according to the National Education Association.

The average salary paid to a Florida public school teacher in the 2009-10 school year was $46,696.

951, what you and others like you forget, not know or don't care to share. And is that state has some of the highest tax rates in the country. Plus I also think it has a state income tax. WHICH WE DON'T! Like I said in an earlier post why don't they want to help ensure that their retirement IS there by putting in part of the money. And if we don't have the teachers start helping out with THEIR retirements, how will we pay for it. Yep right MORE NEW TAXES!!!! So their going to pay it one way or another!

Teachers are not the enemy guys. What you are doing by supporting the pension changes is taking money out of their pockets. They have been without raises for many years which they accepted.

They should have held out for the raises and paid some into the pension system because they would be better off today.

If you want them to contribute to their pension, give them an equal raise.

Before you blast me, anyone in the good old USA had the same opportunity to become a teacher. Many quality people took different careers due to the low pay teachers are paid.

Would any of you be so supportive of making them take a pay cut ? They are already underpaid !

                                .retirement

they get their money back when they retire. 15 years from now it will take 80 % of our budjet just to pay retirements . good luck.
