  • New Smyrna Speedway - Opening Day

Finally found my old newspapers from 1967 and have the proof that New Smyrna Speedway opened as Daytona Raceway on April 23, 1967... The track ran as dirt thru most of the Spring and Summer of 1967 and man was it a dusty mess... The track was paved in the Fall of 1967 and the first two winners were Donnie Tanner (6 cyl) and Larry Flynn (LM)... Early in 1968, the track re-opened as New Smyrna Speedway for the first time and the first World Series (running LM only) was held... That means that 2008 will actually be the 40th World Series....
The newspaper I have is missing the top half, but I have most of the article from opening day, plus half a picture of LM winner Charlie Brown... Check it out, pretty neat stuff....

Only dirt Late Model champion at NSS?

Dave do remember who the first Late Model champion, and only dirt Late Model champion at NSS was? Sandy Narone,s brother Wayne and I were his pit crew. This driver use to run the same car at Ocala Raceway on friday nights and Deland Raceway on saturdays. This car was his short track car, it was a1955 Chevy. The car he won the championship at NSS dirt track was his big track car that he ocationly ran at the old "Jax" Speedway in Jacksonville, this car was a 1958 Ford.
