You have to remember that some of these drivers act like they are racing in Nascar Jr. And that by next week they should be on TV! They need to remember IT'S A HOBBY! Not your job.

Who was the guy who said racing was The Field of Dreams, (BUILD A RACE CAR THE PROMOTER WILL PAY)? What I want to know is how much extra money did the promoter get if they ran the heat races? NADA yet his employees would have to work longer and maybe harder but why should that matter? I always took it for granted that people built cars and raced them because they enjoyed it not for a payday. I always read about how expensive tires are gas is what it costs to go to the races anymore, I don't think it is cheaper to open those gates for the track owner or promoter than it used to be. Tell you what I would do if I was the track promoter open the gates at 6:30 start the races at 7:30 you race with no practice then if that didn't please the people putting on the show who think they should be paid to show up I'd close the place then see what you get paid. You guys think you deserve appearance money the fans deserve a show too!!!!!

There should be qualifying heats run for any and all divisions at speedways. The cars should be handicapped based on points earned over the past three weeks of racing (more points further back you start) which would assure that the faster cars are in the back and have to come up through the field. The features should be handicapped as well with the better cars being in the back of the pack and having the charge to the front. This would generate some excitement for the fans who otherwise would see all the fast cars up front, a race with very little to no passing, and a boring experience. This is racing after all and not follow the leader. I say no to time trial qualifying. It guarantees a boring night of racing.

Well said. Spectators don't want to watch time trialing and boring races. If you're a racer and afraid to race, then don't call yourself a racer.

                  agreed...

im with you john & winger.... qualifying is boring. i like the heat races with handicaps... nothing more exciting than watching a good racer move from the back to the front. one of my favorites, who does that well is Joe Winchell... ;-) joe lives for challenges. he doesnt gripe about them. a true racer!

No, not quite, Todd. Handicapping based on prior weeks performances is not field inversion. A very good driver with a very good car could have three weeks of bad luck and end up starting way up front in the lineup.

I had someone ask me how missing a race or races works into the handicapping process. Missing a race would count the same as a win for handicapping point purposes. There are no rewards for not supporting the track on a week basis. Miss three consecutive weeks and you automatically start shotgun on the field.

                        exactly.

it's a form of invert on season points ( season points being easier to deal with than a rolling three week average, although someone who knows what they're doing can code a spreadsheet for either variation ) with visitors starting behind regulars ( right behind the really fast guys so they can watch and learn how to get around the track from someone who knows how to do it ).

the way things used to be done.

it's just that between this post and your other one, i think you've covered every single major idea that's been thrown around on Karnac for the last three years.

it's almost like you've been watching and learning.

get a third of the way into the season and a couple of bad weeks in a row isn't going to adjust your starting position very much when you go off of season average.

at the beginning of the season, rolling 3 week and total season function the same.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm not new to the sport of auto racing. I've been associated with auto racing in so many different capacities over a span of several decades that I don't need to learn much if anything more.

My legacy has been developed from racing in New England and upstate New York. I've learned from some of the best of the best over those decades. Names like Harvey Tattersall; Howie Commander; Ben Dodge, Jr.; Tom Curley; Don Hoenig; Jack Arute; Ed Yerrington; Carl Merrill; Larry Cirillo and I could name more who were and/or are currently great successes at running speedways.

I've worked at several extremely successful race tracks that are still open to this day and are just as successful as they ever were. I wore many different hats at those tracks including track announcer, public relations, media relations, handicapper, scorer, and promoter. I hosted my own auto racing talk show on radio for a decade. I've been a writer, editor and a consultant. I've run a race team. I drove briefly. I've experienced auto racing from all the angles.

No I'm not a candidate for rookie of the year to the contrary I am hardened veteran.

i'm not trying to call you a rook, John.

i'm laughing about how everyone who knows anything about racing comes up with pretty much all the same answers ... that none of the tracks want to implement.

it's like racing is ( not ) rocket science or something.

It is maddening and I'll never understand it. Sometimes you get the feeling that some of these tracks enjoy failure.

Bring the likes of a Howie Commander or Ben Dodge, Jr. down to any one of these tracks that is having trouble and watch the turnaround. To men like these failure is not a option.
