FLORIDA DRIVERS RIGHT IN THE THICK OF THINGS AT CHARLOTTE FOR THE LEGENDS MILLION

    FROM LEGENDSNATION.COM

Stevens Tops Speed Chart as Inaugural Legends Million Gets Underway
07-15-2010 | By Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC) PR

The inaugural Legends Million Weekend got underway Thursday with more than 350 cars taking to the frontstretch quarter-mile oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Doug Stevens was the night’s fastest overall qualifier during time trials, which set Friday’s heat race lineups.

The special three-day event, running Thursday through Saturday, is bringing Legend Car and Bandolero drivers from more than 36 sates and two foreign countries to the Mecca of Motorsports for the largest grassroots race in history.

The Legend Cars, who will compete for an unprecedented $1 million purse in Saturday night’s A-Feature, took to the track for practice and Friday’s heat race qualifying. The Bandolero Cars participated in the first round of the Bandolero Triple Crown, a three night event with feature races in each of the three divisions: Bandolero Outlaws, Bandits and Beginner Bandits.

Stevens, of Griffin, Ga., topped the 144-car Legends Million division field during time trial sessions, with a posted lap of 17.246 seconds.

“I had a great car all weekend,” said Stevens. “I just knew with only three qualifying laps I had to put it all together for at least one. I had one corner I messed up on and one lap I knew I was really good. I was just glad I could hold on for the top spot.

“We are making history here and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am very excited to be here and I really just can’t believe I am the fastest qualifier.”

David Ragan was second fastest followed by Austin Hill, Dennis Lambert and Stephen Cantrell.

Clay Hair, of Mt. Pleasant, N.C., topped the 64-car Masters division field during time trial sessions, with a posted lap of 17.442 seconds. Tim Brockhouse was second fastest followed by John Sossoman, Jeff Haynie and Billy R. Gomez Jr.

Sean Rayhall, of Winston, Ga., topped the 87-car Semi-Pro/Young Lions division field during time trial sessions, with a posted lap of 17.363 seconds. Gregory Lang was second fastest followed by Chase Catania, Mason Massey and Kyle Hall.

Bandolero feature winners included Riley Halverson, of Concord, N.C., in the Bandolero Outlaws division; Clayton Weatherman, of Wentzville, Mo., in the Bandolero Bandits division; and Matt Craig, of Kannapolis, N.C., in the Bandolero Beginner Bandits division.

The Legends Million is a one-of-a-kind race featuring a total purse of $1 million with the A-Main winner guaranteed to take home $250,000. The final spot in the feature is assured $10,000.

Competitors participating in the Legends Million are registered in one of three divisions: Young Lions/Semi-Pro, Masters or The Legends Million, which is open to all drivers.

Each division will run heat races and an A-Main race, with the Legends Million A-Feature serving as the grand finale of the three-day event. The winners of the Masters and Semi-Pro/Young Lions division A-Main races will earn an unprecedented $30,000 and $25,000, respectively.

The Legends Million weekend will continue Friday with full slates of racing for both Legend Cars and Bandoleros. Spectator gates open and heat races begin at 1 p.m.

Now that's what I call car count!!!!

For the purse, they were expecting way more than that. The IMCA National in Boone, Iowa draws 350+ Mods and 800+ total for waaaaaaaay less money than that. In fact the Mod race, ''The Main Event'', unless it changed a lot in past few years, was less than $2000 to win, and for that, you had to beat the best of 350+ of the best Mods drivers in North America.

The Chili Bowl, draws close to 300 cars, World 100 for Super Late Models in the 200 range.

144 Legend is very good, but considering the purse size, it's definitely not great or outstanding, nothing to piss all over your shoes.
