The V8 StockCar Road Racing Series racers return to Road Atlanta Raceway
this weekend to once again to attempt to tame what many consider
North America's toughest and most challenging road course. The 2.5 mile
circuit is on most road racers list of favorites. The SPO and GT-1 cars
can top 175 mph on the long back straight, then have to gear all the way
down to first, before climbing the hill towards the blind turn 12. With a
combination of elevation change, fast sweeping turns, high speed uphill
esses and heavy braking zones, the challenges are constant.
Some 35 stock cars and GT's are entered and a good show is ensured.
At the mid point of the V8 Series, Dave Machavern leads the V8 GT-1 class
in his Tommy Riggins built Corvette. Doug Wilson leads in GT-2 in a BMW M3,
with former NASCAR DASH champ Larry Hoopaugh the SPO stock car leader and Kentuckian
Randy Walker leading in GTA.
