OK, all of you superfans. I can't begin to compete with you on the number of tracks you've attended. However, I'd like all of you to pick your "favorite" local short track. Leave out the NASCAR and Indy tracks. Pick one dirt and one asphalt. Tough assignment but let's see what we get. My picks for overall favorite tracks are Lebanon Valley in NY for dirt track and Oswego in NY for asphalt. I don't believe either one of these tracks would be picked for hosting my most memorable race but are my picks for a great overall experience.

Asphalt track for me is a tie between Lake Erie Speedway, and Nashville Fairgrounds. Nice facilities, full fields in every class (all of them painted nicely and decaled), and very competetive racing. Lake Erie is a VERY nice track, that makes Lakeland look like it's still under construction. Nashville is much older, but the layout and efficiency is second to none.
Dirt track, by far, is Lowe's Dirt Track. From the campground that has electrical and 24-hour hot showers (plus a free concert), to the racey track surface (with ZERO dust... it's not tolerated), this is one of the nicest in the country. All the haulers are parked outside the track, the line-up lane runs right in front of the grandstands (to get an up-close view or picture of your favorites) and every race rolls out directly behind the one thats finished. Even their "Crashcar" division is unique and entertaining.
Throw in the Quaker Steak & Lube just up the street for a killer lunch and a few beers, and this is one great place to visit. 2-day tickets are only $50 and you get every penny's worth of it.

Putting my fan hat on, my vote is hands down for the fairgrounds speedway in nashville. Only 3 divisions ran the big track. Latemodels, super trucks and street stocks. It was the most exciting racing I have ever seen in my life. The street stocks were the first division up and they all looked like cup cars from the 70s and 80s. Most were even painted like an old cup car with their corresponding number. The racing was 2 wide 15 rows deep for the entire 40 lap race. There was racing and passing every where you looked. Next was the super trucks. it was a meager field of about 20 but wow what a show. The leader would get passed by about 10 cars at once, he would work his way back up and next thing he was back out the line getting passed again. No one lead more than 2 or 3 laps at once. The latemodels were super fast and could pass on the inside and outside. It was a race full of passing and good clean racing. I always wished I got the chance to go back just to watch a race there again.

My favorite asphalt track probably isn't the niscest of the best, but it has the most history. Everyone Lee Petty to Ralph Earnhardt to David Peason has raced there, and the place was built by Bill France in the early 1940's. It's the famed Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, South Carolina.
My favorite dirt track has to be another South Carolina track. Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney was 1/2 mile, high banked, and scary fast too! Great racing! I hear the place has been downsized now though. Probably not half of what it used to be.
So why not Ocala? Well, in all honesty the asphalt racing at Ocala pretty much sucked. The place NEVER should have been paved, especially with as little apparent planning as went into it. As a dirt track we'll all have to see what happens after February 29th. I'm betting that with Ocala's unique shape and the quality of the clay, it's gonna be pretty awesome.

For pavement, it is Oswego NY, home of the Supermodifieds. I've only been there twice, but I loved the atmosphere and enthusiasm for the Supers.
I've been to far fewer dirt tracks, and none of the really famous ones. I guess East Bay in February with 15 sprint races on the program is tough to beat.
My sentimental favorite will always be good old Hialeah. R.I.P.Last edited by Boneman; 01-07-2008, 09:41 AM.

paved - Slinger, hands down. 1/4 mile with a higher bank than Daytona. two true grooves ( 3 or 4 for Bandelero's or Slinger Bees ), quality drivers who respect each other, passing galore, high quality concessions, officiating that doesn't tolerate idiocy and they finish every night off with a figure-8.
if you leave Slinger unhappy, you're never going to like circle track racing anywhere, at anytime, for any reason.Racers Supporting Racers - for all your Vero Beach area automotive repair needs:

They would probably stop me and Boneman at the gate. Wouldnt even let us in.
don't bring your cars and they'll mistake you two for yoopers. then they'll let you in out of pity that you've had to cheer for the Lions for 3 decades.Racers Supporting Racers - for all your Vero Beach area automotive repair needs:

1) Golden Gate Speedway: No other track I've been to had the atmosphere of this place... Great racing, great people, great food... and now it's a friggin' flea market... sad.
2) Orlando Raceway - The old Taft track wasn't a showplace but I grew up at this track and made many life-long friends from going there... As a kid, I lived for Friday nights there...
3) Amarillo (TX) Speedbowl - I went to this track every Saturday night while I was stationed in New Mexico... Ran just two classes, NCRA Supermodifieds and Stock Cars... Also called the Silver Dollar Speedway... It cost 3 bucks to get in... If you gave them a five dollar bill, you got two silver dollars as change... At the season ending Supermod Championship race, the winner got $1500 in Silver dollars given to him in victory lane... It took an hour and a half to drive there from Clovis, NM, but if the races got over at 10PM, I'd get home by 10:30... How? Because Texas is Central time and NM is Mountain time...
