  • From Jack Smith

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have responded with kindness, well wishes and prayers and contributions to our medical necessities.

To say the events in my life since February has been a life changing experience would be an understatement of some magnitude.

I have sent private communications to those who have made contributions to assist in our medical needs, and the extent to which these contributions have been helpful is beyond words to express.

But there is something that I need to say to each and every one one of you, and while it is something I find extremely difficult to express, it is at the same time something I must get off my chest.

In February 2010, after a year long adventure with back pain which forced me to eventually curtail almost all of my racing activities, I was told by the head of neuro-surgery at The University of South Florida/Moffitt Cancer Center that I had a large tumor in one of my lower vertebrae.

In February I underwent two major back surgeries at Moffitt to remove the tumor and to rebuild my back. I have been at home recovering for the last three weeks. I am doing good with the recovery.

Over the course of the last two to three years, I have found myself quite disgruntled with the whole racing deal and as many of you know, have moved away from much of the former activities I had previously been involved in.

The next thing I know I am in a major cancer center, not sure if I am going to even make it home alive, much less resume any semblance of my former life. My children and other family members and close friends came to my rescue, both emotionally and physically.

But something else happened which has changed my life forever.

    You.

The outpouring of support from members of the racing community has completely overwhelmed me and not only made me confront some of my own wretchedness, but has given me a hope and joy in people I have not had ever in my life, at least not as an adult.

To read the letters sent to me, the comments posted on racing's message boards and the phone calls wishing me well, have made me realize what a truly lucky person I am.

I still have a fight on my hands physically, dealing with the possibility of a return of cancer, but I am in far better shape now. Knowing that I have you on my side has given me not only a bigger sword with which to fight, it has given me the courage to fight the fight.

In the hospital there was a point where I lost my courage and it took a combination of the brute force of my family and the love expressed on these message forum pages to rekindle the courage needed to survive the brutal nature of the surgeries.

For that I am forever in your debt. You have given me hope. You have given me love.

    The love you take
Is equal to the love you make"

Isn't this Racing Community something? When something happens to one of our own, the rest gather the troops and do what they can to help. I'm glad you got to see that side of humanity, and that you will continue "see the light" that there are a hell of a lot of good people out there in this world.

I'm sure it will be a long haul for you, but now you truly know how many friends you have, and the support of thousands. In that respect, you ARE a lucky man.

I hope you rough road back gets smoother as you go, and I hope to see you at a RACE real soon!

    Jerry!

Jack you have learned a wonderful thing, and you are a big part of this family !

        Jack,
All of us become upset with the racing deal at times. We love to complain and question tracks, drivers, promoters etc. and we sometimes have good reason. But I learned along time ago how loyal and giving the racing family is and that is what keeps me going through the times when it is not as fun. Jack you and I have had our disagreements and words in the past, but I can truly say that we have become friends throught it all. And you sir have given back in helping my fundraisers and the Charity Truckers 200 with free advertising and promotion of the event. I sir am grateful to return to you help this year through our Truck event, as one of our families this year we want to be there for you and your family. I have been a bit busy with travel and then getting back to work, but I will be calling you and trying to get down to see and pray with you one of the upcoming weekends. I am praying for you and your family and I am always here if you need something. Thanks for all you have done for racing over the years. Be strong, know we are all supporting you and will help all we can. Talk to you soon.

          Do What The Doctor Says........

I'm not saying you don't but don't even think that just because you might be feeling better, you can kind of "back slide" on certain things your not supposed to do.

YOU are the head of this "family". YOU are the main reason (Rick and whom ever else is involved) that brought this "racing family" together.

I'm looking forward to seeing you again, when and where ever that might be, so hang in there and keep a positive attitude.
You can beat this thing. I know you can!!

God Speed and a quick recovery,
          FIRE IT UP!!!

              Jack,

It is great to hear from you and you have been in my thoughts every day since I found out. You are a fighter and will give 110% to make whatever needs to happen, happen. This site is proof of that.
I will do whatever I can to help you and this site out, and see them both return full force to again rule the southeast!!
Keep up the good work and enjoy every day, knowing you have a great family behind you, and knowing that we are thankful we have you.

Jack, it's like the picture of the frog halfway down the bird's throat, "Don't give up".
My wife takes 3-5 bags of chemo every Thursday and radiation the other days of the week. It started out with chemo about one a month and radiation once in a while. Now it's something everyday.
Eventually, the bird is going to swallow the frog, it's just where you end up, when the bird releases you out the other end.
