The tech turbulence at the New Smyrna was a good thing. For so many years, we have complained that the NSS rules were “flexible” in certain conditions, had were often enforced selectively. This year was different. The hammer fell hard and it fell often. The best part is that none of the cars that were DQ’d packed up and left. They took it like grown-ups and got their stuff right….eventually! Also, the rigorous tech did not chase away cars, but a few new teams showed up every night. IMHO, this course of action sets the track up for more participation and a bigger and better World Series in 2011. Gutsy move!
A standing ovation to Volusia Speedway for removing the haulers from the infield, and giving the spectators an un-blocked view of the entire track. I visited VSP twice, and although the infield was not clear for the sprints, it was for the late models. Try doing that every year!
Thank goodness for the improved surface at NSS. Whatever occurred to make it a solidly two groove track has been a real blessing. I was there every night, for at least part of the show, and enjoyed the action more than any other year, including the “Good Old Days”.
New Smyrna ran the Pass race and the TBARA sprint shows on Sunday afternoons. It was great since the weather was cold each time, and we all got home in time to rest up for work. Can you make that the permanent Sunday schedule?
I really liked the spectator access to the pits at VSP, but the admission through the front gate entrance is really expensive.
Daytona is such a waste of time! I took my sons to the twin 150’s, but I just can’t deal with the hassle, the expense, the redneck fans who stand up the whole time, etc. etc. At least the kids got in free, although we could only see 1/3 of the track from those low seats. Why does that track insist on blasting alternative rock music to country music fans?
It would be great if the local classes could run a night or two at New Smyrna. There were so many of us local drivers who attended and enjoyed it, but we were also anxious to be part of the World Series. Why not rope off a section of the pits for classes that will rotate in and out every day or two? There is a big section in the infield pits that never filled up (turns 3 and 4), or the parking lot pit used by the sprints looked like it worked out too.
Jerry Binner’s Modified Reunion went ok for the third year. The first two were solid home-runs, but between the weather delay and who knows what else, this year’s edition was much smaller. I’m sure Jerry will get his signature event back up to full speed and more for 2011.
East Bay is still running, and Citrus and Zephyrhills are coming up this weekend too. I love being a race fan in February!
