  • 5:35 Thursday at Volusia Speedway Park

5:35 and fans are slowly coming in for tonight. Kindof cloudy but not too cold as of yet. Just found out that Alan Johnson of Middlesex, NY who was in the #14J Big Block Modified will now run the #66w as Wallace Stacey is out of it. Walked the upper pits and some cars have gone home but still a large number of Late Models and Big Block Modifieds here.

6:25 - Late Models are on the track now for their hot laps. Everything is going on schedule. Just had a very nice man come up to the Media Room and introduce himself to me and thanked me for everything I do for karnac. Wow, after everything going on lately, I thought I was going to have an egg thrown at me but I didn't. Nice for a change. So far, Steve Francis is the fastest on the track of the Late Models. Chub Frank was the first to get into the 16 second bracket and right now Earl Pearson, Jr. stands on top with a 16.267 lap. Last group of Late Models have just come out. Jack Sullivan just went 16.055 for the fastest time. But Jason Landers just did a 15.961 with Tim McCreadie 2nd fastest right now with a 16.047. Top ten in qualifying for the Late Models are Jared Landers 15.961, Tim McCreadie 16.047, Jack Sullivan 16.055, Shannon Babb 16.063, John Blankenship 16.069, Brad Neat 16.095, Billy Moyer 16.110, Jimmy Owens 16.117, Brady Smith 16.195 and Brandon Kinzer 16.206.

7:30 Qualifying heats for Late Models is fixing to begin. Only the top 3 go into the A-Main, the rest must race the B-Main. Late Models now do the Delware Restarts for all heats and races. Makes it a very interesting race with the leader out front and everyone else two by two in the back. Heat #1 is on the track now. Heat 1 has been won by Billy Moyer, Rick Eckert, Jared Landers, Eric Wells, and Justin Ratliff. Heat #2 - Tim McCreadie, Jimmy Owens, Chub Frank, Dan Schlieper, and Vic Coffey. Heat #3 - Brady Smith, Chris Madden, Jack Sullivan, Steve Casebolt, Jason Feger. Heat #4 - Shannon Babb, Darrell Lanigan, Brandon Kinzer, Eric Jacobsen, and Patrick Sheltra. Heat #5 - Dale McDowell, John Blankenship, Josh Richards, Dale McDowell, and Randy Korte. Heat #6 - Earl Pearson, Jr., Brad Neat, Eddie Carrier, Jr., Austin Hubbard, and Tommy Kerr. Remember, just the top 3 transfer to the A-Main, the rest must race in the B-Main.

Up next Big Block Mods - Top 5 go to A-Main - Heat #1 - John Stangle, Pat Ward, Rob Bellinger, Rich Scagliotta, and Mario Clair. Heat #2 - Brett Hearn, Matt Sheppard, Dale Planck, Rich Pratt, Jr., and Tim Kerr. Heat #3 - Jimmy Phelps, 49, Alan Johnson, Vince Vitale, and Andy Bachetti. Heat #4 - Bobby Varin, Billy Decker, Jamie Mills, Billy Pauch, Willy Decker.

B-Main winners that are transferring to the A-Main in the Late Models are Steve Francis, Dennis Erb, Jr., Greg Johnson, Eric Jacobsen, Tim Dohm, and Tim Fuller. Up next, the Consi race for the Big Blocks. 10 laps, 2 races, top 2 go into A-Main. Going into the A-Mains for the Big Blocks are Jeff Brownell, Willy Decker, Jimmy Horton, and Rick Laubach.

Coming up next - A-Main for the Late Models. $10,000 to win. Dale McDowell just went from first to last after a caution on the track. To say he might be alittle upset, well, that would be an understatement at this point. Earl Pearson, Jr. now sits on the pole. Earl Pearson, Jr. leads over Shannon Babb, Tim McCreadie, Billy Moyer, and Brady Smith. Pearson continues to lead the way over Moyer, McCreadie, Babb and Smith. Caution has come out on lap 15 for Jared Landers. Pearson continues to lead the way.

Delware restart with Pearson on the point followed by 39 McCreadie, 21 Moyer, 2 Smith, and 1. Caution is out again on lap 19 for Shannon Babb who has taken his car on pit road for a possible flat tire. Delaware restart again for Earl Pearson, Jr. Halfway, lap 25, it is still Pearson, Josh Richards, Billy Moyer, Brady Smith and Tim McCreadie. Lap 26 Josh Richards takes over the point putting Pearson second. Lap 38 the caution comes out for #41 Brad Neat. 12 laps left to see who will get the big money tonight.

Josh Richards has won the 50 lap Late Model feature followed by Earl Pearson, Jr., Brady Smith, Tim McCreadie, and Steve Francis. Weather is coming in fast so they are forgoing Victory Lane with the cars and only bringing the drivers up to the stand to get into the Big Block Modified race before the weather turns bad. Right now the Late Models are going thru tech. All have cleared and it is time to go racing with the Big Blocks. Congratulations to Josh Richards.

Big Blocks are ready to roll. Bobby Varin leads the cars to green. Caution is out on lap 7 with Billy Decker leading the way over Bobby Varin, Brett Hearn, Matt Sheppard, and Jimmy Phelps. Caution was for Billy Pauch in the #1P. Cars are lined up for the restart. Red flag is out for Jeff Brownell who has done some serious rolls in turn 3. A number of cars are involved in turn 3. Brownell when he finished rolling was on top of Richie Pratt's car but both as far as we know are okay. Also involved were the #8, #7, #65, #22, #6, 14, and #42. Pratt has been able to move his car since getting Brownell's car off of him. Altogether there are nine cars involved. Pratt has pulled his roof back up and has returned to the track to race.

Matt Sheppard has won the 30 lap feature followed by Jamie Mills, Brett Hearn, Jimmy Phelps, and Danny Johnson (I think). Full results will follow in alittle while.

        A couple of observations here:

Dale McDowell may have been upset... as he should be, but only at himself. He spun all on his own from the pole. BUT, what a great drive, pissed as he was, coming from 29th to 6th at the finish.

Winner, Josh Richards, has never really impressed me until tonight. Starting 17th, he put the whoop-ass on, and won... going away, all the way from 17th starting position. VERY impressive drive!!!

In the modifieds, Jamie Mills made a believer out of me! He found, and raced in, grooves that aren't even a normal part of the racing surface. At the top of turns 3-4, if you jump the cushion, it throws the car into a kind-of off cambered angle (almost like a reverse-angled banking)... every time I've seen a car in that particular spot was moments before they crashed. Not Jamie! He was passing cars, and ATTACKING a dirt track like few I've ever seen in my life. This kid has a pair of 16# bowling balls in his jock strap! In talking with few fans from Delaware (where Jamie is from), they say he drives like this every week, at every track he goes to. If he raced here every week, I'd follow him to every track he goes too... he's THAT exciting!!!

But with all the excitement this guy was showing everyone, nobody seemed to notice that Matt Sheppard was digging along on the inside line very smoothly. Matt passed Mills, and most folks didn't even notice. In fact, several people I talked to on the way to the parking lot said "what?... Mills didn't WIN"???.

On this night, smooth won out over the spectacular... nobody even noticed!

And to top it all off, we were able to stop at NSS on the way home, and saw Sean Bass win the 50 lap Crate Late Model show at NSS.

What a COOOL night of racing!

Sorry I missed you Jerry, you could have come to the media room and said hello like the other man did. It was nice to meet someone new from the karnac family.

Alex was totally amazed last night how fast the modified driver got out of his car after that wild and very scary barrel roll in turns 3 and 4. I thought for sure he would be hurt but he wasn't. And I was sorry to see that Earl Pearson lost the lead because I truly would have liked to have seen him win. I have been sent press releases from his team now for quite a few years so he was one name I really knew but he still can.

The racing last night was really, really good. The track was really, really good compared to the night before and no one could really pass anyone. I have really enjoyed my first DIRTcar Nationals except for the "r" days but that happens.

And I am very happy for you that you did not cancel your modified reunion but moved it to Saturday. Like I said, if I can, I will try and stop by on my way to Volusia to see you. I have never been able to come but was going to really try this year.

I didn't see that flip start, but when I looked over there, that car was WAY up in the air, and rolling quickly. Those cars are built like tanks, and I had no real concerns about him walking away unhurt.

Does anyome remember the name of the web-site that Joe mentioned would have the video clip from that wreck?

Hope to see you on Saturday Jane!

Jerry, would it have been dirtvision.com? You need to subscribe to see it though.

Before alot of the media left last night, we watched the replay a number of times on that roll. I hadn't realized that another car also rolled during that since I was watching the one car go nuts but actually two cars rolled. And poor Richie Pratt in the #0 was just sitting there and suddenly had a car on his roof which was a real surprise to him. I will try and find out for you if someone does have a replay of that and post it for you tomorrow.
