  • Unlimited Funds and 30 days

Look folks, I am going crazy and this dead board isn't helping.

SO, I was sitting here thinking about anything that might stir the racing group.

What would YOU do if you had UNLIMITED FUNDS and 30 DAYS to do whatever you want related to racing - where would you go - what would you do (No Jerry, it isn't for stock piling liquid drinks for future races).

Oh, and the 30 days doesn't start for another 2 months (so we will be back in the swing of race season - NO NO NO, the hell with that cause SPEED WEEK is coming up - so start your 30 days whenever you want).

ONLY RULE: You can't spend it on building a new car/team, but you can spend it on buying extra doors and fenders for a current car/team. You could spend it on "Sandwiches" to take to the track. Bubba could say the hell with work and go to EVERYNIGHT of Speedweek.

So give it a shot... lets see where you'd spend this "Make Believe" money if you had 30 days to do it. (No Ocala Jim, bedroom toys won't cut it)
Thank a Police Officer for what they do........... OSF:

    Oooooooooo K

Thats OK Bob,already have plenty of bedroom toys anyway.......

With unlimited funds huh..well how about sponsoring and funding a few good small teams for Cup and Nationwide series to compete with the big guys. Boris Said(sp) would be my driver and I would be allowed to drive it in practice all year.

Some of my closest friends would have a yearly pass as well...youse know who you are............

RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.

I'd follow the UMP Summernationals for Dirt Late Models. They race 29 times, in 30 days, at 29 different tracks. They call it "the Hell Tour".

Of course, if money were no object, my motorhome would be pulling a UMP Modified behind it, and run in all the shows that the Mods are the support division (which is most of the 29).

And by the way, I've never been to a single track on that schedule. It would make nearly 30 new tracks for a race-chaser like myself. I'm right near 90 right now.

Ok, you did say "unlimited", so here goes.

First, I'd buy Sunshine Speedway and St. Augustine Speedway, establish a trust fund with a millions of dollars in each and donate everything to a trustee to operate both tracks.

Then buy a big parcel of land somewhere in the swamp in S. Florida. On that property, rebuild replicas of Palm Beach Fairgrounds, Hialeah and Florida City Speedways. The track surfaces would be the same, but the track's ammenities would have to be modern and first class. Floriida City would be small enough to cover and air condition! Naturally, each track would have its own trust fund for weekly operation.

That would probably fill my 30 days, and only cost a hundred million or so.

If there was anything left, maybe I'd put a set of rubber on my mini.

First thing on day 1 I'd do is get people in to sort out the drainage and surface issues at Orlando, to prevent the rain-outs from last year. I'd also have them sort the grandstands out while they're there to make them safer and updated. We'd get a great new PA system at the same time so you can hear the announcements and commentary during the racing. That would all be a good start.

I'd also purchase 10 identical race cars, probably of a lower division, and then at the end of the month and with all the improvements done I'd have a proper Little 500 night, where all the drivers from the different divisions and types of racing get out on the track, in front of the fans, and race identical cars in a knockout heat format. Let's see once and for all who the best drivers are!

And while I'm at it, I'd put another stadium up next to the oval track - a good sized dirt motorcycle speedway track, complete with grandstands and facillities, and I'd open a speedway school there for people who wanted to try it.

WOW... I like the way you guys think.

Jim - sounds like you've thought/dreamed about this before.

Jerry - If anyone in the world deserved to do what you stated - IT WOULD BE YOU.

Bone - you must have been ready for this one... bring life back into those tracks would be a dream come true for MANY people (like that covered-a/c idea as well). It'd be great to see along with the new tires.

Andy - you've been doing some serious thinking too..... imagine Orlando without water/drainage problems and decent seating....WOW

I think we all have thought about what we would do "IF ONLY....."

Just imagine having unlimited funds - (and to think there are some people out there that have just that.... they were born into it or pull something great off). It'd be great as long as not abused or wasted on the wrong things. We'd be able to really help others that "Really" need it.

Oh well, got to get back to the real world - WORK

I would start by franchising the pork chop sammich concession from VSP speedweeks and somehow work my way into quality control.

Then, through years of design/engineering compressed into about a month, I would come up with a way to get the SLM's to look and sound and drive like they did in the late 70's early 80's. I would rename anything less than a limited late model a "thunder car" and make them all run together.

Once all that was in the bag, I would track down the ISMA supermods and follow them around a bit. I would also find a way to drive a WoO 410 and spend whatever was left on trying to get the doodoo smell out of my clothes.

Oh and you could bet your last burrito I would be on an indefinite leave from work, flying from track to track during speedweeks in my new helicopter.
